#but what can you do

LIVE

PSA for anyone writing werewolves out there (or anyone with a recent suspicious animal bite, idk, I don’t know your life): the full moon ALWAYS rises at sunset and sets at sunrise, while waxing moons will rise & set earlier in the evening and waning moons will rise & set later. (New moons technically rise and set when the sun does, which is a fun and weird piece of astronomy to think about.)

Here is a useful graphic to clarify the situation.

I’m writing this down both to help MYSELF remember that, no really, that weird suspicious trivia I remember is actually true and I have sources, and also in hopes of inspiring more astronomically-oriented werewolf fiction. Because we always want more werewolf fiction.

Prologue Beginning Previous   Next

Tris spent the next week tracking down and dealing with as many of Talia’s known associates as she could. Far too many were headed to Paris. For the most part she stuck to ‘accidents’ that would incapacitate them for at least a few months, but there were a few that she felt it was necessary to remove as threats permanently. A couple just enjoyed killing far too much and the others were the ones capable of thinking for themselves. Talia didn’t keep too many of them around after what happened to Ra’s, but there were some that worried her. Unfortunately the worst one was traveling with her and Tris couldn’t get to him without alerting her. She was just going to have to take him out while Talia was distracted with Damian.

Damian and his father were doing absolutely nothing to prepare. At least not that she could see. She really wanted to leave them to their fate and say screw it, but between Gina insisting that she needed to confront Talia and Cass being in the line of fire… she just couldn’t. She’d only had one familial string for so long and she couldn’t bear to go back to that, or even none since Gina seemed intent on going after Talia herself regardless. At this point she just wished she’d never come to Paris in the first place but that was a useless train of thought. So she put her energy into making Talia’s life a living hell. It was honestly more enjoyable than she’d expected. Between taking her people out of commission and blowing up safe houses and weapon caches, the week went by quickly.

She was still on edge for a lot of reasons. Partly it was just that everything could easily go wrong but it was mostly the people around her. Gina was still training the others but Tris could tell she was preparing them to enter into this fight whether it came to them or not even after she’d specifically told her that she wasn’t bringing them in since they wouldn’t be targeted. Talia didn’t know about the Miraculous and it needed to stay that way. Gina obviously had other plans. She also kept seeing the Blakes whispering in corners and while it could have simply been that they were discussing business, it was setting her instincts off. Add that to the fact that all the strings leading to the people around her had begun pulsing insistently, like they were anticipating what was to come, and she was somewhere between wanting to throw up and wanting to portal them all somewhere safe, or at least far from Paris.

“You shouldn’t worry so much. Everything will turn out fine.” It took everything in her not to roll her eyes. Instead she shot Gina a flat look.

“You mean like everything else in my life?” She really hadn’t meant for that to come out of her mouth but with Talia getting so close and the damn strings thrumming with a warning she couldn’t decipher she was too worked up to bottle everything inside the way she normally did.

“You aren’t alone anymore, that will make all the difference.” Tris felt herself shutdown the way she used to in the League so that Talia wouldn’t be able to see the effect her training had on her. She didn’t even recognize the voice that came from her mouth.

“The last time I wasn’t alone my parents died. I’d rather not have history repeat itself.” She saw Gina flinch and knew she should feel guilty, or something at least. Instead there was nothing. She couldn’t afford to be distracted by emotions, there was just too much at stake. It was better this way. “I’ll tell you one last time, keep them away from whatever is about to happen. We don’t know what Talia is planning and we don’t know what her resources are. Magic may not be enough to protect them and their deaths will be on you.” Tris walked away before the woman could argue with her. Instead she focused on the string that connected her to Talia. It was moving in a way that made it seem as though Talia was pacing. She had to be closer to the city than they thought for that to be happening. They were running out of time.

—————————————————-

Tris sat on a rooftop watching Damian and his father dressed as Batman and Robin, along with the rest of their team. It made their willingness to take on Talia more understandable but no less stupid considering they didn’t know the terrain they way the would have in Gotham. Not to mention they were just standing out in the open, waiting for Talia to come to them like she wouldn’t have an ambush planned. She wanted so badly to just leave them to their fate. Then Cass spotted her and smiled. Fucking wonderful. Her only consolation was that she was the only one and didn’t seem inclined to let the others know.

She could only continue to curse internally as Gina showed up with the Blake boys and the Miraculous users in tow. Why could no one do what they were told? She couldn’t tell what was being said but Batman’s body language screamed that he was pissed off. Now they were going to be focused on each other making it even easier for Talia to surprise them. Which meant it was her job to make sure they all stayed alive. Perfect.

Tris melded back into the shadows and began moving in a spiral around the rooftop where they were still arguing, and getting louder by the second. She was on her second loop when she encountered some of Talia’s underlings. Luckily they were completely focused on their target. Even with her dropping Talia’s minions left and right they didn’t seem to feel the need to be cautious. It would be their last mistake.

As she continued, she left bodies in her wake. This close to their target Talia would have them on radio silence so she wouldn’t know her numbers were dwindling until she tried to enact whatever plan she had prepared.  It was a surprise the others sorely needed given she could still hear Batman and Gina yelling at each other. Every once in a while another voice would chime in but it was rare. She had just finished her fifth loop when she spotted Talia with her main group. There were twenty of them in all so the odds weren’t terrible. Especially since the woman liked to make an entrance. She wouldn’t try to take them down right away, no she would have to be seen so she could taunt them first. It was one of her biggest weaknesses.

Lining herself up directly behind Talia’s main guard, Tris could only hope she’d picked off most of the reinforcements. If not this was going to get ugly fast. Talia walked out into the open and she had to hold back laughter at how annoyed she looked when no one noticed. Well, she was pretty sure Cass did but the girl didn’t let Talia see. Damian was the next to see and just scowled at her while he nudged his father. You could tell the exact moment Both Bruce and Gina noticed her because there was finally silence.

“Honestly Beloved, I expected better of you. Bringing outsiders into our family chat is bad enough but the fact that you’ve decided to abandon your no kill rule makes me wonder what else has changed.” Tris couldn’t help but roll her eyes. It seemed like everyone in this insanity had tunnel vision of some sort. The fact that Talia couldn’t come up with a better explanation than someone completely rewriting their moral code was just more proof of that.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about. Gina was just leaving and I haven’t killed anyone.”

“The hell I am.” It was a perfect out for her and the Miraculous users but her vendetta against Talia wouldn’t allow it. None of the teenagers looked nervous and Tris began to wonder if she should have been more explicit about the threat so they would at least be cautious. Talia ignored them and turned to Damian.

“Well then it’s nice to know your education wasn’t a complete waste. If you’re going against your father’s wishes perhaps there is hope for you yet.” And strike two. The disgusted look on Damian’s face was rather amusing if she was being honest.

“I have done nothing of the sort. Perhaps you should look at all the enemies you’ve made for the answer.” Tris caught the Miraculous holders giving each other looks and hoped Talia didn’t catch it. None of them would survive under torture if she got her hands on them and they were making themselves a target.

“He’s right you know. The amount of people who want you dead or want to make you suffer is quite impressive and the list is continuously growing.” The oldest Blake sounded almost bored at that observation, but Tris could see how tense he was even from two rooftops over. She still had no idea why they hated Talia so much. Talia focused on Bruce

“There is no way someone without access to the Zeta tubes or the ability to teleport would have been able to go after so many of my people. One of your team is straying from the fold Beloved.” This time Talia noticed the Miraculous users side eyeing each other.  “Oh, so you all know something about this?” Her tone was enough to make Tris’ hair try to stand on end. She knew that tone. It always proceeded an attack. She assembled the blow gun she carried quickly and silently, loading it with a dart laced with lethal poison.

“We don’t know anything.” Kagami was not the one she expected to answer but it was probably for the best given the other options. “I do find it interesting that you simply assume you know the capabilities of all your enemies without verifying them. It is a bad habit to fall into.” It was almost worth it to have the Miraculous in danger like this to see Talia’s rage at being talked down to by a child. Almost.

“Your insolence will cost you your life little girl.” The words were accompanied by a hand gesture and Tris let out a relieved breath when Talia’s guard sprang from the shadows with only four others appearing that she must have missed. A blink was the only indication Talia gave that this wasn’t what she’d expected but it was enough. Tris put the blowgun to her mouth and lined up on her target.

erm some miss power backstory for the au

little blurb to go with the post:

a blank slate, so to speak.

the perfect candidate. the ambition. the hunger for something more.

22012 was what they were looking for. an expendable cadet with an insatiable need to win.

besides, maybe her kind could be useful.

previous research had only aimed to give more power to those who had pre existing abilities. perhaps it would make more sense to experiment on a kind without such abilities. maybe then the participants body wouldn’t be overrun with raw power.

watching the other test subjects writhe in agony had gotten old. they all seemed to lack something.

was it an absence of drive?

maybe they lacked the desire to be something more.

the subjects had all been born with powers already, so it was likely they couldn’t fathom what it meant to struggle. to need that power. that advantage.

yes this time would be different.

this time would be successful.
