Do you read paperbacks, eBooks or hardbound books?
Right now my hardbound edition is in the works. Does it seem backwards ◀️ to have the paperback come out first?
For decades, publishers would first produce hardbound editions because that’s how it was always done. There was an incentive, too: Hardbacks generate more income & publishers could more quickly recover the author’s “advance” ✍️ + money spent on printing, marketing, shipping & distribution.
Paperbacks would be released a year later & give books a second life as a cheaper & more portable option. EBooks are even more portable. Despite the notion that printed books are dead, Pew Research revealed 37% of readers only read printed books; 28% read print+digital; & 27% read no books at all. (1% didn’t know!)
Hardbound books feel more substantial. I’m a collector of hardback books & felt #BloggingOnInstagram wouldn’t be real until it came out with a hard cover & dustjacket.
Doing the sequence backward has been a blessing. Shortly after my book went into production Instagram announced platform changes that drove me bonkers. There is no way a book on a technology-topic ⌨️ can be completely current unless it exists only as an eBook. By doing the hardback second, I have an opportunity to insert an extra chapter—The Afterword.
In the Afterword, I address some of the developments that happened since publishing. And even though things will keep changing, I feel better being able to mention some of them. Also, I misspelled someone’s name & this edition has given me a chance to fix it. If you opt for the hardbound edition, you’ll read about some of the changes.
Would you like to have a personal assistant? ♀️ Sometimes I feel like I need one. Thanks to @soniabublaitis, I met @rodjonesartist @thoughtrowpodcast who is helping me reach more people.
Thank you again for inspiring me to write my book. And happy birthday @queenhorsfall
