How long do you think it’s been since someone played with Angel’s hair?

The reason we never saw Angel visit Aki’s house was because this would happen and he’d be trapped fo

Day 87 : Makima

Between Yuuji, Denji, Takemichi, and even Legosi, I’m loving this new shonen protagonist gen that I’m affectionately dubbing “An Actually Nice Teenage Boy”.

We’ve long since left the era of Naruto or Ichigo, where the protagonist was very much a teenage boy, but would often be rude or disrespectful or perverted for the sake of comedy, rendering them honestly somewhat irritating and unlikable.

Then the pendulum swung around and we got Deku and Tanjiro (though I do LIKE Tanjiro), where the protagonist was nice but did not feel like a real teenage boy. They were generically nice, kind of wide eyed and innocent in a way I don’t think any 14-16 year old really is.

(Of course there are notable outliers. Not every shonen protagonist falls into these molds in the first place, and there are some that break this timeline I’m setting. Gon, for instance, is an INCREDIBLY believable, and yet nice, 12 year old boy (albeit a slightly disturbed one). I’m just noting some very broad trends).

Now though?

Now we’re getting MCs that are nice, and caring, and respectful. MCs that are loyal and soft and genuinely want to do good…

AND are dumb teenage boys!

They crack dumb teenage jokes without being grating! They’re kinda horny without being disrespectful and violating people’s boundaries! They get angry, they get sad, they get arrogant, but they’re kind !!!

Yuuji is so immature in his sense of humour, and yet he knows when to cut the shit and be serious.

Denji is so pent up and touch starved, but he NEVER goes against anyone’s consent.

Takemichi let’s any small achievement get to his head, but he always puts others first.

Legosi is arrogantly pushing his morals onto others, but it’s all in the name of protecting those he loves.

These !! Are !! Teenage !! Boys !! Not saints and not assholes and I love them so much.

More of this please.

Denji is an incredible protagonist for one simple reason:

He is SO respectful.

He’s a horny touch starved teenage boy. He’s a pervert, he thinks about sex and girls all the time. His entire goal in life at one point was to touch some boobs.

And yet never, EVER, has Denji violated anyone’s consent. Ever.

He’s never peeped on anyone. Never groped anyone against their will. Never took pictures or even really gawked at anyone. He’s had sexual thoughts about almost every woman he’s met, sure, but he never acted on it without some form of consent.

The most he’s done is make deals with various girls about doing various things with them … Thing is, it was usually offered to him BY the girls.

Power offered him to let him touch her chest if he helped - and when he did, Denji did not even bring it up again until she did. He didn’t demand she uphold her side of the deal nor even really mentioned it - she could’ve just let it pass and he wouldn’t say a word.

Himeno offered to kiss him if they made it out of the hotel. Again, Denji didn’t bring it up until she did, though he was considerably enthusiastic about it.

Makima offered him ‘anything’, and Denji decided to ask for sex - however he checked and double checked if that would, in fact, be okay to ask. (And he didn’t even end up asking for it).

He’s a genuinely believeable teenage boy, he’s gonna be horny, he’s gonna think about sex, but he’s also a NICE teenage boy, and he has no desire to make anyone uncomfortable.

And the author doesn’t see sexual assault as a hahah funny !!!

Denji is proof that you can write a likable pervert character.

All you have to do is make them respectful.
