[Part I] ~ I just got back from a week in (Cancun + Playa del Carmen areas) doing hella touristy things w/ @eritreaaa for her bachelorette! I actively spent the week trying to be very in the moment because I honestly had a lot of anxiety about the trip before heading out, but then realized how amazingly blessed I am to get to share a week with a member of my chosen family in a country that is home for her ••• as a bit of a history nerd seeing Chichen Itza, one of the seven wonders of the world with my own eyes was deeply moving ‼️✨ Other highlights were stepping out of my comfort zone to swim in a cenote that was 100+ feet deep, getting to admire old Mexican architecture and burning my mouth repeatedly because I couldn’t wait for the caramel to cool on my churros | shout out @paodiaz17 @05sperez for being amazing travel buds #chichenitza #mexico #cancun #yucatan #travelgram #khanyoufeelthelove #visitmexico

historical-nonfiction:

The Toltec, a Nahuatl-speaking tribe, held sway over what is now central Mexico from the 900s through the 1300s CE. The name has many meanings: an “urbanite,” a “cultured” person, and, literally, the “reed person,” derived from their urban centre, Tollan (“Place of the Reeds”). Beginning in the 1300s, the invasion of the nomadic Chichimec destroyed the Toltec hegemony in central Mexico. Among the invaders were the Aztecs, or Mexica, who destroyed Tollan about the mid-1300s. (Click through the images to read the captions, about the artifacts and monuments the Toltec left behind.)
