Chapter 4: How to Speak Selkie

“Cap’n! You need to wake up a-right now!”

It was too early for this. Rat usually only woke him up if it was a dire emergency, like that time a Danjuran navy ship pulled into the harbor. Gulper Bay rarely saw any activity which required his quartermaster to rouse him at this ungodly hour. Corsaire grumbled from his place on the floor and lifted his head. He peeked out the window and released a loud groan. Slamming his pillow over his head, the pirate captain saw the sun on the horizon. Daybreak, what could be so important so early? The captain heard a loud snore and turned his attention to his bed. There laid the redheaded woman, snoring and fast asleep on his comfortable mattress. She was louder than a canon and as annoying as seagull poop on deck.

The spitfire had gotten a case of food poisoning from her visit to the market. After warning her not to try the fried salmon on a stick, she did it anyway. For the next few hours, Orana tossed up the contents of her stomach over the ledge. The crew took turns holding her hair and offering her rum to wash out her mouth. Rat ended up steering the boat to the other side of port where the waves rocked the ship less for her sake. Once she felt a bit better, Seer tucked her into the captain’s quarters. Bomba set a bucket beside of her bed just in case. The men were taking care of her like she was an invalid and all he got was the cold, hard floor. Somehow, this woman had bewitched his crew.
