I know I’ve been on the “many people in this fandom are fucking weird about Laura’s characters specifically” beat for the past like…year, but there’s a very specific tendency in the fandom I haven’t brought up regarding Jester but which I also can’t stand.
The best way I can put it is to badly misremember a quote from a book I once read that Victorian men treated Victorian women “as their superiors, certainly, but never their equal.” Like, there’s sometimes a treatment of Jester as almost semi-divine or immortal, but in a way that also kind of brings her out of the story and divides her from the rest of the Nein in a way that doesn’t allow her to be messy or unsure or live a normal life or be treated as just like, a character.
and like, based on her whole character growth arc being about learning that the real world isn’t always storybook, and is messy, and you can hurt people by accident and it’s still okay to be yourself, it really feels like very deliberately missing the point (also kind of extremely ironic)

Here’s this literal punk rock with the massive opal headwound, gold scars and a giant ass glass hammer, but yet their also wearing a macaroni and plastic bead necklace that looks as if it was made by a third grader. Or better yet, the same kind of baby pink ribbon that their partners flaming monkey wears.
Kingsley becomes the next Pirate King but “forgets” to lift the ban on the Mighty Nein as a joke.
Technically anyone that captures any of the Nein while their on the island will be given a huge reward but it’s really not worth it unless you enjoy spending time as a turtle and/or being publicly humiliated.
Orly & Crew are very specifically allowed and even honored guests on the island. There’s sketches of the Nein posted at the port with “do not allow in” written next to them.
Watching the last 3 eps of TLOVM, one really gets the feeling Taliesin Jaffe personally broke down the doors of Titmouse studios screaming “Give me more edge! More I say! I want them making Linkin Park AMVs of this shit!!!”
