Up there, there’s freedom. But around, only indifferent walls. In them, windows feeding on still cerulean daylight. Laid down, dusty trails for the few curious or in need. Ahead, the narrowing pathways of “traboules”, awaiting. In the air, stale smells getting thicker with every step. But up there, freedom. Left and right, ancient walls in unhurried decay. On the ground, remains of some hasty lunch. Half concealed, a mattress prepared for another cold night in Lyon. In front of the eyes, half darkness. Under tired legs, slippery pavement. In the hand, dark bitterness from Vox Populi. In mouth, burnt coffee and faint hops. In memory, a faint milk stout sweetness, quickly gone. On all sides, growing crushing claustrophobia. Up there? Freedom.

The sky is thin as paper here… but what is beyond it? What do all these shapes and colors mean, why the artsy fake ceilings, do they actually mean skies? Are they hung up there above your head to stop your imagination or to guide it further and higher? Why do modern artists have to explain their mind at length, while classical art comes without a user manual? Why does modern art want to tell you something, instead of masterfully playing with chiaroscuro and arcane layering techniques? Why did one want to impress while the other tries to guide? When did the concept of art and its role in our lives change, and so dramatically? When did literature and social critique become art? And what’s left of the good old heartwarming happiness in front of a rainy landscape, when did it get substituted by brainy worries about overpopulation or climate change? At least you can have a local Vollenhoven&co Extra Stout right in front of Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum and let its crunchy bitter chill calm down your stormy thoughts, and let them find a quieter way, hopefully your way. Because through many doors you can come in, but through one you will arrive. And modern art wants to bring you closer to that one door.

…even if all you can see is a… black shoe?!

I like beer, I really like beer. So when I travel I try to get a taste for local brews, but everyone enjoys getting a taste of what everyone has to offer.

That is where Biscayne Gas comes in, tucked away past the intersection of Biscayne Boulevard and 54th Street you wouldn’t think this shell branded gas station would be anything other than that; but it is so much more.

Biscayne Gas offers over 700 different beers, all the crafts one could want gathered under one roof. Hell if you love Wine or Sake they have got you covered on that too.

Hitachino Nest. La Chouffe. Asahi. Boulevard Brewing. Rogue. Brooklyn Brewery special releases. Mikkeller. Chimay. Brew Dog. Belgian. German. Peruvian. American. English. And so on. I personally grabbed these

The only people who could compete with such a collection is maybe Total Wine, but you’ll never get the one on one experience of discussing different flavors that you can with the people at the shop. That is why shops like this will always outdo chain stores.

Biscayne gas really is a unique place, if you’re in the area stop in. Make sure to let them know Andrew sent you.

I was only able to snap some pictures of the front of the shop, but there is an entire walk in freezer i’m sure is full of even more selections.
