I always like to know how and where the inspiration for characters come from. I create characters all day long. And I can create them from the simplest of things or events. So when new characters that play a somewhat large part in a story appear that obviously have a long history connected to each other, in this case Creote and Savant-
I wanna know. How did they come to be?

I have a slight theory… I try to follow everything Gail Simone posts and says. I can’t follow her every post everywhere- I’m not a stalker- but I am a fan. I know she posted she originally had a concept for a Male Black Canary when she was first approached to write the Birds (which I’m not going to lie, I’m a bit obsessed with this concept of a Male Black Canary). I can’t help but wonder if Savant grew from some of the discarded seeds of the Male Black Canary. I definitely see a similarity, a blurred mirror image or inverse concept between him and Canary (as well as him and Oracle, but that’s another story).

and I don’t mean Black Canary and Huntress.

One of the most memorable ‘things’ to come out of Gail Simone’s run on the Birds has to be Savant and Creote. I remember that first issue and being bothered that my first “real” monthly arc I was going to be reading of the Birds, Oracle and Canary were already getting their butts handed to them. But I quickly got over it. I was so interested to see how the girls were going to show them how bad an idea it is to mess with the Birds of Prey.  Little did I know how much I would end up loving Creote and Savant by the end of series.

This post concerns Savant and Creote, two characters who debuted in Birds of Prey v.1 c. 2003 as enemies of the team, but who were offered a chance to reform and later became friends and allies. I kinda fell in love with these guys and I used to practically keep vigil for their appearances, but I’ve recently decided I don’t really care to read about them again. I’ve been trying to articulate why for a few weeks now, and I think I’ve finally managed it. Spoilers and probable TL;DR below.
