Dinner at the Barnes’ was one of the most awkward experiences I’d ever had beyond the Ritual just now.
Bucky and Natasha were at opposite ends of the table and I was on one side in-between them. Neither of them spoke to the other. Only the scraping of the cutlery on plates cut through the silence that just hung heavy on the entire room.
I barely ate, too uncomfortable and too eager to just be in my new room alone. Occasionally I would sneak glances at the two of them but they were more interested in glaring daggers at the other.
I couldn’t believe I’d not even been here a few hours and I was already causing marital issues for them. If I couldn’t keep everyone in the household happy, they’d probably farm me off to Rumlow or the Baron and things would be much worse for me there.

It had started as a routine blood test, a government mandated order to check the effects of prolonged alien contact on the general public. People were reporting problems with fertility ever since the Battle of New York. Then it became an invasive check to establish why only some women were affected.
We didn’t know they were secretly monitoring us, compiling a list of the fertile, only for them to flip it around and take us from our homes. We belonged to the government now and we lost our right to bodily autonomy.
