On this eve of thanks giving, I would like to give thanks for my beautiful life, my beautiful desert, and my beautiful country.
Thanks to my (great-)great-grandparents for moving here…if you guys hadn’t done so, who knows where I’d be? Maybe just another desperate refugee, trying to get in…because there’s nowhere I’d rather live <3

Always wanted to check out Zzyzx, and finally got around to it the other day with my friend Randy Fosth/Shutterbug Studio! We’re always out exploring the desert in his 4WD Jeep, looking for cool new shooting locations :)
Back in the day (the 1930s), Zzyzyx was a sort of holistic health retreat ran by a nutty semi-cult-leader-type, out in the middle of nowhere in the Mojave Desert between Vegas and Barstow. But the government eventually shut it down, and all the buildings just sat there crumbling in the desert sun…waiting for nitwit nude models to come along.
Alas, however, Zzyzyx is not a good place to shoot – the University of California took it over and it’s a fully-functioning desert research center. The old buildings have been repurposed as classrooms and dormitories, and the students looked at us pretty weird when we came cruising through.
We ended up going to Baker, instead….and got fabulous photos there, which are coming soon!

My favorite desert spot to shoot art nudes
Golden hour at Apex Dry Lake….right before my truck got stuck in the mud directly to the south of this spot! It had rained heavily the previous weekend, and much of the “dry” lake had become an actual lake. I had to leave my truck there for three days until the mud dried enough to drive it out. Shot with a Samsung Galaxy S3!
On a recent shoot, the photographer made a classic rookie move and left his camera battery at home. Rather than forfeit the day, however, he whipped out his old-ass Samsung and shot me with that. The results actually came out pretty freaking good, proving that it doesn’t matter what kind of equipment you use – you can still get good shots….if you know what the fuck you’re doing!!!
