we were built to fall apart… and fall back together

It was a quiet night. Meag sat in the passenger seat of Stephen’s lamborghini as he drove through the winding mountain roads. He was speaking at some medical conference this evening.

“Have I told you that you look stunning?” Stephen asks, his lip curling up into a smirk.

She reached for his hand, intertwining her fingers through his. He sped up the car, passing someone in front of them, and driving at dangerous speeds.

“Stephen, slow down!”

The car behind them rear ended them, sending the car spinning. Stephen hit the brakes but it was too late, the car flipped off the side of the road and off the cliff.

Stephen awoke to a beeping sound. He was in a hospital room. Meag sat in front of him, a few cuts on her face and a cast on her left arm, but she was okay.

“Meag..” he says hoarsely. “What happened?”

“You were in surgery for thirteen hours. Eleven pins in the bones of your hands. The doctor said he did everything he could.” She reaches over and brushes a bit of hair out of his eyes. “No one could have done better, Stephen.”

“I could.”

-

Meag turned off the stove as she finished preparing dinner. She walked over to the fridge to grab some drinks, and her gaze stopped on a polaroid she’d put on the fridge. It was her and Stephen at one of Tony’s parties. They were dressed formally, him in a tuxedo and her in a purple evening gown. He had his arm around her and they were both smiling. Another one showed them at the beach. They were both in their bathing suits, taking a walk by the ocean. Stephen was kissing her. She smiled at the photos before turning to the living room to call Stephen for dinner.

“Stephen, dinner’s ready,” she says, walking into the living room. Stephen stood in silence, his fists clenched. “What’s wrong?”

He starts pacing around the living room. “There’s a new procedure in Tokyo,” he mutters. “They cultured donor stem cells, and then harvesting them, and then 3D printing a scaffold…. If I could get a loan together, just a small loan…”

“Stephen,” Meag interrupted. “You’ve always spent money as fast as you can make it, but now you’re spending money we don’t even have! Maybe it’s time to consider stopping.”

Stephen slams the laptop down on the table. “Now is exactly the time not to stop, because, you see I’m not getting any better!” Stephen says, raising his voice.

Meag flinched for a second. She knew he was having a hard time, but he didn’t need to act rashly or lash out.

“Stephen, some things just can’t be fixed, this isn’t the end! There are other things that can give your life meaning!”

“Like what? Like you?” he says harshly.

“This is the part where you apologize,” she says, near tears. She was nearly shaking at this point.

It was just a fight, she told herself. It was just a stupid fight.

“This is the part where you leave,” he says, not looking her in the eye.

“Fine,” Meag says, turning away. “I can’t watch you do this to yourself anymore.”

“Difficult for you, is it?”

“Yes,” she answers. “It is. It breaks my heart to see you this way.” The tears spill onto her red cheeks as Meag looks up at her boyfriend. “I love you, I’m here for you. Please think about these things before you make a rash decision.”

“Don’t pity me.”

“I’m not putting you, Stephen! I love you.”

“Then what are you doing here? You just love a sob story, don’t you?” He says harshly.

“No, that’s not-“

“Is that what I am to you now?Poor Stephen Strange! A charity case, he finally needs me, another drag of humanity for you to work on.”

A sob breaks out of her. “No, Stephen. That’s not true. That’s not true…”

“Patch him up and send him back into the world, hearts just humming, you care SO much, don’t you?” He yells.

Meag backed away. She was shaking. She was speechless. Stephen had turned away, not daring to look her in the eye. She backed out of the room slowly. She would give him some time to cool off, and she would come back later.

-

Meag sat on her couch, her dog, Bats, sitting in her lap. She wore sweatpants and a pale blue Columbia University sweatshirt. It was Stephen’s. It was the only thing of his she still had.

The doorbell rang and Meag gently pushed the pup onto the other seat so she could stand.

“I’ll be right back, Batsie.”

Meag walked over to the door and opened it. On the other side was the last person she thought she’d ever see.

“Stephen?”

“Hey.” He was leaning against the doorway. She realized too quickly it was for support, he’d been injured. His face was covered in cuts. He wore a blue tunic and pants, brown boots, and a red cloak. He also had a goatee now.

“What happened to you?” Meag asks. “Where have you been? I thought you were dead!”

“I’m sorry. It’s a long story.”

“What are you wearing?”

He chuckles, then groans in pain, clutching his abdomen.

Meag grabs his arm. “Come inside. I’ll get the first aid kit.”

Stephen takes a seat on the couch as Meag heads to the bathroom to find the first aid kit. Bats sniffs around Stephen, checking him out. Then the pup climbs in his lap, circling around before sitting in his lap.

“You’re a cute dog,” Stephen says, petting him.

Meag comes back into the room with the first aid kit. She smiles when she sees Stephen and Bats.

“You got a dog,” he says as she stands in front of him, opening the first aid kit to clean his cuts.

“You would never let ne get one,” Meag says matter-of-factly, dabbing the cuts with rubbing alcohol.

“So you jumped at the chance as soon as I was gone. How many other things did I keep you from doing? Do you have a list?”

“Stephen, you know that’s not what I meant,” Meag replies. “And why are you mad at me? You’re the one left. I couldn’t stay in the penthouse after you left, that big empty space, it was cold, it was devoid of life, Stephen. We didn’t even have any pictures of us on the walls. I brought your stuff, anything you hadn’t sold, with me when I moved. It’s in the other room, still boxed up.”

Stephen looks down, noticing the sweatshirt she was wearing. It was pale blue and slightly too big, it had the Columbia University logo in the front.

“What about that?” he asks, gesturing towards the sweatshirt.

“I like it,” Meag says. “It’s warm. And it reminded me of you.”

“I’ve missed you so much,” Stephen says. “I thought about you every day. I was such an asshole, and I’m sorry.”

“I missed you too.” Meag finishes cleaning the cuts on his face and finally notices how close they are. She blushes and Stephen closes the distance between them with a kiss.
