Simplifying genetics for those that are reading this using the Labrador Retriever as my base breed. Remember my post “Retrievers retrieve” this is what I meant.

.

.

In the Labrador world, they’re breeders that breed “show dogs” others breed “hunting dogs” and then there are backyard breeders. All three “types” of Labs derived many generations ago from the same genetic make-up, a working/purposeful LAB. Of the three types, the “hunting dog” type is the only lineage that is bred specifically to hunt and retrieve, with the majority of pups doing the job naturally.

.

.

The majority of “show dogs” derive from the same initial genetic make-up of those purposeful/working dogs but a different type of breeder took them another route and many generations of breeding for conformation over workability, this lineage of Labradors have lost some of its natural abilities.

.

.

Here is where GENETICS comes into play. You take a “show puppy” with the most prey drive and natural instincts, place it in a competent trainers hands to carefully honed the specific task of retrieving with intensive training and let
genetics to kick in. Chances are this Show Lab’s genetics will shine through.

.

.

Now in the case of backyard breeders the chances of finding a real gem of a dog is actually pretty high. In most cases these dogs would be considered a scatterbred (a dog of unknown lineage) but a great many Labs in this case are a mixture of working/show lines that over time have been convoluted. This can be said of any other breeds of dogs.
