dolls-and-cats:

Honoring Juneteenth and the broader celebration of emancipation of African-Americans from slavery

content warning: slavery, enslavement, inexcusable harm, trauma

Looking at pictures at my mother’s house this morning made me think about the fact that some of my (white) ancestors, multiple generations of them, enslaved people, sold people, split parents apart from children. And that the stories about that that were handed down to my mom in her childhood, 100 years after emancipation, were “oh weren’t our ancestors nice” stories.

The spin that our ancestors’ actions in that time were nice ends in this era of our family, but that feels grossly inadequate. I feel anxious about saying any of this because I don’t have any good answer about what to do with this awareness of my ancestors having caused unforgivable harm.

The picture is of my dolls, fictional American girl character Addy Walker and her friend, Sarah Moore. People in Philadelphia newly freed from slavery would not have celebrated Juneteenth themselves…my understanding from wikipedia is that it started as a Texas holiday among some African-Americans (including, early on, in Austin) and spread through the South…winding its way to the north in the 20th century with the Great Migration.

But I’m including Addy and Sarah on this holiday because their stories are during the period at the end of the Civil War and beginning of emancipation. Sarah is made from my second Healthy Roots doll, bought secondhand and rewigged.

julie-albright:

I went to the American girl store today!!

I went with a friend and brought my custom doll for some pictures, but I lot of them ended up blurry.

I got some of her with Courtney’s bed that came out super fuzzy so I leaned into it and did a little vintage edit with them

Hopefully I’ll be back soon to take more!

So cute
