An impish glint lit Rapunzel’s eyes and she leaned in, lowering her voice. “Want to know a secret about most still life paintings? They are practice for artists. But people who think they know better insist they are worth something simply because of the brush that was put to canvas, and so artists have been inventing the meaning behind apples and candles, rather than admit they are selling exercises in light and shadow and nothing more.”
She sat back again, grinning broadly. “I do not know how it is in New Granada, but here, they practically worship ancient Roman aesthetic. Even our women’s clothing and hair fashion is inspired by the clothing of the time! Now that I have said it, can you not see it?”
Now she had Luisa’s full attention, her brown eyes grew slightly wider - before she had to muffle a snort-chuckle behind a gloved hand.
“I see, I see. Well! You must have visited many galleries! Do tell me, how are they? I am eager to visit them… I yearn to experience the cultural aspects of London while I am here.” she pursed her lips and pulled out a fan with feathers. Old fashioned, but it had belonged to tia Carla and it more or less matched her creampuff-coloured gown.
“We really must pick a date to meet up, Rapunzel. If you would be inclined to visit the Madley’s home, I- the chef will be delighted to try out a recipe I brought from home.”
Here, Rapunzel balked, only slightly. “I… No, actually, I have not,” she confessed, deflating a little. “I have managed to visit Somerset House, but no other. Mama Gothel has not allowed me to go out much until my debut, but ever since, I have been incredibly busy. I should very much like to see the other galleries, as well.”
Her own fan came out, waving lazily but serving to cool Rapunzel’s flustered face somewhat. She did not like thinking about how different her life had been from almost everyone else.
“Please, dosend me a formal invitation, and soon. It would allow me some time where I can just be Rapunzel, instead of being the Diamond.”
