It was announced today that Princess Mako (25), the eldest daughter of Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko, and the eldest grandchild of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko is set to be engaged to a former classmate at her university and is expected to marry next year. It was confirmed by the Imperial Household Agency that her fiancé is Kei Komuro, a 25-year-old graduate student at Tokyo’s Hitotsubashi University who also works at a law firm. It will be the first engagement among the four grandchildren of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

Princess Mako received a complete parure of jewelry when she turned 20 and officially came of age. Included in the parure is a tiara, earrings, a necklace, a brooch, and bracelets. The set was made by Japanese jeweler Wako, and was first worn in October 2011, when the Princess made an official visit to the Emperor and Empress as part of her coming of age events.
