So I finished the event and I uhh have a theory that may or may not have a basis but I’ll put it under a readmore

Okay so I started playing Genshhin late so I missed the Unreconciled Stars event (I have another thing to say about that but ehh whateverR).

Anyway, with some advance Googling and Wiki-ing, Scaramouche finds out that the stars are fake. I read that the nails were “brought down” to villages that had somehow broken the Heavenly Principles so obvi Celestia punished them.

Anyway, part of my theory is that the nails also do more– they act as a homing beacon, a power source and an invisible barrier. I’ll explain more in detail:

Homing beacon: It’s a fucking nail lol I’m not saying it pulsates as there isn’t really evidence of it but from Celestia, they probably have a general idea of where the nail is.

Power source: On Dragonspine’s peak, it takes an enormous amount of “power” to release the hold the nail has of the peak before it rises up and stays up. Same holds true of the nail in the Chasm as we have seen it inadvertently awaken a Ruin Serpent but also destroy it [that much is pretty obvious]. Again, it too needed some sort of power for it to fall.

Invisible barrier; The main chunk of this theory. From the event, we are told that the Ruin Serpent and other forces of Khaenri’ah and creatuers were sealed to protect Liyue… of which Boyang, Bosacius and the Millelith had no idea what kind of forces live there.

Under the assumption that the Nail came before Boyang +company, this nail most likely destroyed an ancient civilization (one that predates the upside-down ruins of the city) Whatever distinctive barrier was there had weakened and continued to do so as wars and battles were fought in and around it. Boyang+company was able to seal the creatures that attacked but also, given the Compass’ powers, it had re-strengthen the barrier a bit. When Itto and Yelan had an elemental show-off, because of the fragility of the barrier, it had triggered a reaction and they all fell.

This is very important to note as by the end of the cutsenes in 2.7, we see that the compass was able to make it past most of the barrier before it breaks and we see Ziao falling. However, he is saved by Zhongli.

Archon or no Archon; Gnosis or no gnosis, Zhongli, by all accounts, shouldn’t have had the ability to save Xiao. If whatever forces beneath the Chasm were able to read and play with a powerful yaksha’s mind (sane or not sane), we can make the assumption that this power predatesCelestia or any of the Archons and their Gnosis.

How is Zhongli able to save Xiao even without his gnosis?
The nail acts as a power source as it was from Celestia and even in game play, we are able to see the strength and control that each Archon has over their respective element without their Gnosis. Zhongli used the nail to amplify whatever powers he could plus the compass made it towards the weakest point of the barrier (towards the outer shell) that he was able to save Xiao.

That paleontologist that we meet even speculates that the Chasm was once a part of the ocean [think of Enkanomiya’s aesthetics and the Nameless Ruins]. A meteor basically created the Chasm however.. the ocean is pretty old (both in-universe and in real life).

One can only imagine what kind of creatures lived there… before the Chasm was created… What about what kind of civilization was there prior to the meteor, what kind of powers, what kind of hidden secrets that had.

Can we say this invisible power that read people’s minds is bad? What if it is retaliation for the destruction of whatever civilization was present prior to the creation of the Chasm? How terrifying was this power that even Celestia destroyed it?

SO YEAH… I HAVE A LOT OF THINGS TO SAY ABOUT THIS EVENT. Please correct or add on to my theory however you can! I started Genshin back in like Sept 2021 so I’m probably missing a lot of info tbqh. But I hope you enjoyed reading this long ‘what if’ theory [I’m so sorry I wrote a lot!]
