At the sanctuary devoted to the Maria Santissima di Gulfi in Chiarmonte Gulfi (Ragusa Province), pilgrims offered heart ex-votos to the Virgin Mother. Ex-votos are iconographic body parts or other symbols that are given to the Madonna (That is, in this case. At other sacred sites, ex-votos would be offered to the divinity or saint celebrated there.) as gratitude for healing or grace received. Those pictured here represent ailments the heart (Feeling broken hearted, anyone?). Ex-votos are very common in Sicily. Silver Heart III.
Oxidised sterling silver, garnets and sapphires.
5 x 3.5 x 3.5 cm.

This was the third heart that I had cast, and I went for a more experimental approach. The wax had not been quite hot enough when I slip cast it in the silicone mould, so pour marks and gaps were evident but I like them very much. I embellished the edge of the open face with lots of garnets and tiny black sapphires, mostly to see if cast-in stones would work on something this size.
The garnets were altered slightly, with most of them having a metallic sheen (bonus); a few stones moved and ended up in random places, but I am very happy with the results.
