Look up! A palazzo in the town of Palazzolo Acreide possesses the longest Baroque-style balcony in Sicily. Pinecones are a powerful symbol that you’ll see all over Sicily and southern Italy in ceramic (like these shown) on balconies, front gates, and prominently displayed inside homes. The significance of pinecones in modern times is one of hospitality and welcoming, but not only. The pinecone as a botanical is a reproductive organ. Female pinecones hold seeds. Male pinecones hold pollen. From ancient Greek times, the pine cone recalls the Greek god of male fertility, Dionysus (who had one atop his staff or thyrsus) - - remember, fertility translates to prosperity! Furthermore, in ancient, spiritual wisdom, images of the botanical represent the third eye - - awakened inner spiritual wisdom. And so, the pinecone communicates human enlightenment, regeneration, resurrection, and eternal life. Needless to say, it’s a powerful souvenir for yourself or a loved one. I received a message from someone today who wants to propose to his girlfriend in Palermo or Cefalù. I thought about where I would suggest, and after deciding that the top of La Rocca in Cefalù would be too much of a hike and Palermo center may be a bit too chaotic, my thoughts went straight here, to one of my favorite spots in all of Sicily, the Cloister of Montreale Cathedral. And specifically to this fountain. This spot is one of the most serene and sacred places outside of any forest. It is a sort of a tree with a stream unto itself. And locals will tell you if you put your hand in the waters of the fountain and make a wish for love, it will come true. So, yes, this spot. When you visit Monreale, you must also visit the cloister. It’s otherworldly. And I implore you to stop and take a moment at this fountain. Wait for the other tourists to wander away so you have a moment here by yourself. Then take a deep breath and savor the sites and sounds of the place and time. And if you want, make a beautiful proposal to your loved one. Yesterday, I spent a splendid morning exploring the secret staircases and hidden alleyways of Ragusa Ibla. This morning I woke up in the inn where we are hosting part of our Yoga in Sicily tour this June (3 spots left!). Before breakfast, I went for a walk, and I was thrilled to see this amazingly clear day which presented this spectacular view of Mount Etna. Even the locals were stopped in their tracks when they saw Mamma so clearly. Being a constantly erupting volcano, basically a massive smokestack, ensures that she’ll be shrouded in clouds and haze much of the time. Put your phone down and look around. As I stood at the bar at Don Gino enjoying my caffè macchiato and observing the comings and goings of the moment, I noticed across the bar a tasting happening. The baker (pictured) had appeared from the kitchen and asked the cashier to come taste her new colomba (aka Easter panettone) recipe. I could see from where I was that it was pistachio, my favorite. Not only that, but, I’m very serious about panettone. This is something I spend a lot of money on during the holidays. The price point makes a big difference in the quality and taste. The cashier, who knows me as Evelina’s cousin from New York, saw my wanting eyes across the room. I did the Italian “tasting/eating” hand language, and she waved me over. Yup. I was invited for my opinion on this new creation. Knowing Don Gino’s pastries very well (maybe too well!), I was not surprised at how outstanding this was. The bread itself was light and airy and cloud-like as it should be. It was perfectly not too sweet… What made it amazing was the combination of the pistachio glaze with the crushed nuts settled into the smothered coating with this cloud of bread. Wow. Grazie! What fun. So, put your phone down. The beautiful ceramics of @ceramicartisticamirellapipia need to be shared! Mirella Pipia hails from Bagheria, where you can visit her workshop and boutique. An artist in every sense of the word, Pipia’s works are inspired by the myths and folklore of Sicily, but even more so by her mother’s needlework in tadding and lace. So these tiles you see, which adorn the walls where I’m currently staying, are inspired by flowers, the colors of Sicily, and the lace, crochet, and tadding that the women around Mirella have always created for diversion and gifts for loved ones. My grandmother, who was from Bagheria, used to crochet. I wish I learned how to from her. (Sigh.) Perhaps that is why I love these designs so much, because they inherently remind me of my nonna. This evening I made my Saint Joseph’s bread for the altar that I will construct for Thursday’s event that @experiencesicily is hosting with @gosicily_cook_eat_explore and @babylonmercantile. It’s going to be an outstanding day and evening! I’ve been making bread loaves for San Giuseppe for many years now. And once in the rhythm of kneading the dough and then shaping it, it truly is a meditation. This loaf is a palm. This shape represents Jesus. It will be placed next to a staff that represents Saint Joseph, and a wreath that represents Santa Maria, the Madonna. The three together symbolize the Holy Family. Making loaves is a practice of thanksgiving and prayer that is observed all over Sicily and in many parts of Southern Italy. It is an illustration of the abundance one has received or one is seeking. Saint Joseph’s Day is March 19.
