New hair! Grabbed a quick selfie on the way to go thrifting with my girls over the weekend. I’ve been growing out my naturally ginger hair for an upcoming play (Dancing at Lughnasa), but in the meantime I decided to go candy apple red, with pink throughout. Missing the as much as me, or loving this for Fall too? Anyone else love to change their hair seasonally (or whenever the mood strikes)? #rainbowhair #colorqueen #pinkhair #red #bighair #curlygirl #unicornhair #fall2018 #styleforall #acolorstory #mylittleponyhair #livingcolorfully #limecrime #nrage #thatsdarling #magicalgirl #myunicornlife #styleblogger #womensfashion #flair #lapelpins #jeanjacket #berets #supportsmallbusiness

Run with the Wind
Streaming on Crunchyroll.

Male 1 is running away with some bread he just stole, when Male 2 chases after him and asks him if he likes to run. A strange thing to get in this moment, considering he’s running out of necessity and not for fun, but Male 2 is in desperate need of one more member for his apartment complex. An apartment complex that doubles as the Track and Field Club, he so cheerfully announces to a room of unsuspecting boys who thought this was cheap, easy rent.

It’s not surprising that the character designer also worked on Haikyuu and Welcome to the Ballroom, but that means it’s a very cute cast of boys. That’s not everything this first episode has going for it (though it’s a huge draw for me. The glasses boy is top tier.), it sets the stage for an emotionally grounded sports story with a wide range of characters. And it looks beautiful doing it, something that comes as no surprise from Production I.G.

It’s just a feel good premiere, and although there’s little to talk about at this point considering the first episode was mainly introductions, it still manages to set the mood and set the bar pretty high for itself.

If you like Haikyuu or the 1st/2nd season of Free, this is something you should check out.

Will I watch Episode 2? Yes!

Rascal does not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
Streaming on Crunchyroll.

When Male Lead meets Female Lead in the library dressed in a bunny girl uniform, he learns that he is the only one that can see her at all times. She’s suffering from something called Adolescence Syndrome, where your emotional scars and burdens physically manifest in your reality. She was tired of being seen, and so she simply started to be invisible and forgotten.

Essentially this is Bakemonogatari-Lite. Which works well for me. It lacks the visual punch and zaniness that Monogatari has, but it might be nice to view a more somber and lowkey version of similar themes. That Male and Female Lead try to build the same rapport that the leads in Monogatari have doesn’t really work in the show’s favour, and neither does the weird little sister in bed when he wakes up scene (couldn’t we take from Monogatari WITHOUT taking that?) The bunny girl costume is also pretty contrived, but these are small hiccups in what was otherwise a nice first episode.

I hope the show realizes it doesn’t need Dumb Anime Cliches ™ to sell itself and tries to fit into its own shoes better. Otherwise, it will probably stop being interesting fast.

Will I Watch Episode 2? Yes.

Iroduku: The World in Colours
Streaming on Amazon Prime.

Lead female is a mage, however she lost her ability to see colour and now hates magic. On some magic firework night she meets up with her Grandma who says “Now I’m sending you to the past.” and without her consent she’s flung to 2018 with only her Grandmother’s magic shop as a point of reference.

Her Grandma said this will be good for her, but like her Grandma’s Grandma said that time travel is irreversible so I’m not sure what sort of time paradox her Grandmother was trying to create here. Lead Female sees colour in a young boy’s art and my roommate exclaimed “Ah, it’s a Soul Mate AU fic.”

It’s a really pretty show with appealing character designs. I’m not sure one episode was enough to really judge what it’s about on a whole - Unless it’s about the most irresponsible Grandmother in the history of history.

Will I watch episode 2? Yeah, maybe.

wait-

DOGGIES? THEY’RE CALLED THE BLACK DOGGIES??

and I laughed and groaned through the rest of the show every time someone said BLACK DOGGIES because it was impossible to take that seriously and I don’t even care what this is about.

Blah blah warring dorm school clans, blah blah dating in secret, blah blah blah

ZOMBIE LAND SAGA
Streaming on Crunchyroll.

The creator’s of this show put such a huge deal into people going blind into this that I’m going to give you the short summary here: This is funny and charming and you should check it out.

Now for the more meaty summary under a cut.

Female lead has filled out her application to become an idol, or something like that. She bounds happily on her way only to be hit by a truck and killed. She awakens again as a zombie in a mansion of zombies, all of which have been conscripted into a loony man’s Zombie Girl Idol Group of headbanging, screamo. She’s the only one ‘awake’ so far, which means she is more than a groaning, moaning mess like the other girls but doesn’t have her memories from when she was alive. It’s her job to get the other girls on stage performing in an effort to save loony man’s hometown.

This concept is absurd. The real highlight here for me was how much fun the animators put into the way the girls move. Their twitchy, completely unaware movements are charming in a way zombies shouldn’t be but I guess would be if they were dressed like cute idol girls??? Maybe. idk It’s great. It’ll be interesting to see where the show actually goes from here - the PV had a lot of horror clips; were those misleading? Will it be a comedy with horror flavours or just a comedy? Why does their producer think zombie idols are the almighty cure for his home? Why are these zombies so cute?

Will I watch Episode 2? I need to know why these zombies are so cute, so I guess I have to.

Xuan Yuan Sword Luminary
Streaming on Crunchyroll.

One nation wants to take over the place so starts building giant construct war machines to do that. Three kids in their peaceful village get caught in that crossfire. One is now forced to work building the constructs that took his home, while the two sisters travel between small villages making the best of what they lost through performances to earn money. Big sis finds and old scroll that can summon a magic sword and a transforming magic construct that fights really good, boy gets chummy with a member of royalty unknowingly and earns a huge promotion, and little sister gets diddly squat in this first episode. Ripped off. I’m sure conflict will ensue.

This show FRUSTRATES ME. It was by absolutely no means good. There was so much going on, it was rushed, it didn’t look that great, it was super soft and that seemed to contrast everything that was happening on screen. But I really love the concepts behind it? The world itself, the characters - it’s all pummeled into the ground by luke warm production values. I mean you’ve got a girl with a giant glowing green sword, a girl with prosthetic arms who can fight holding weapons with her feet, and a boy who really REALLY needs to learn what a brush is. AND A ROBOT SHEEP.

I just really want to like it, but it’s a headache to watch. So I’m sad.

Will I watch episode 2? Maybe if I’m really bored one day.

That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime
Streaming on Crunchyroll.

Lead male is a pretty down on his life guy without much going on for him. But that’s okay, the title implies it all - he’s just going to die soon anyway and then be reincarnated as a slime. I guess that’s a pretty fresh twist on the “die in the real world get reincarnated in the fantasy world” subset of the Isekai genre.

This was a pretty solid first episode. It’s funny, the character expressions even on a slime are fantastic, the reincarnation/ability system looks very slick - but then that OP plays as the ED and I lost interest immediately. I can’t even put into words why the OP was such an instant downer for me - which is why I’m willing to give the show a second chance. Though, no matter what it becomes from here out, this first episode is certainly worth checking out.

Will I watch Episode 2? Depending on the season, I’ll give it a chance.

BAKUMATSU
Streaming on Crunchyroll.

I just want to preface this by saying that CR’s new player is not good for taking screenshots. I don’t know how to turn off subtitles anymore. The second I press my ‘FN’ key so I can press my ‘Print Screen’ key the screen grays out and the play button appears. I managed to get an okay screenshot this time, but my bar was set low. All I wanted was the glasses guy looking at the screen. It wasn’t hard to find a spot to get that where no one was talking. Even that took 5 tries to get the screenshot. So forgive me if future screenshots have subtitles or aren’t that great.

Anyway, whatever that’s enough about that, let’s talk about BAKUMATSU! Even if I don’t really want to.

BAKUMATSU is about a bunch of good looking guys (this one pictured being the best looking of the bunch for he wears very period accurate spectacles for a story that takes place in historical Japan.) who get shifted to a parallel universe where the badguys have used a magical mcguffin to change time, take over, and teleport old war heroes into their timeline to be their bodyguards.

Oh I forgot to mention that when we timeshift, all the dudes go from wearing pretty standard clothing to Idol Boy with Traditional Japanese flare. It’s all very subtle, you know.

The first half of the episode is useless. I spent it not following anything and I could only pretend to get interested when they introduced a plot element. I mean I guess finding a dude chained to a table and just walking away was pretty funny. That’s all I got out of anything before the universe jumped.

I’ve already given this show more words than it deserves.

Let’s just leave it at: It wasn’t very good.

Will I watch Episode 2? no.
