if you see echoes of the behavior of anti-shipping communities in these videos*, you’re not imagining things.

I’ve said over and over again that fandom is a funhouse mirror: a warped reflection of the wider culture from which it springs. it’s not the same, but nothing about it is original or new: it’s just a different shape.

the structure of ‘anti’ communities are a warped, fandom-esque reflection of the structure of much wider & more influential radicalized groups, such as the alt-right (or more directly though less widely, radfems (& subgroups TERFs/SWERFs)). 

I hope that understanding how these groups operate & how their structures function will help you protect yourself & your friends from falling victim to them.

 (*in this case I was particularly struck by the ‘90% of the alt-right would never call themselves alt-right’ - similarly to how people who behave like antis would never call themselves an ‘anti’ (and increasingly, ‘anti’ communities deny it was ever a self-chosen label).)
