“At my best, I feel connected to the audience. Invincible. My daily insecurities go blank and fade away. That’s an addictive feeling and a hugely rewarding part of performing. I’m my best self up there. I go into a flow. And my superpowers are out.”

“What made me embrace this magical place that I call music? Love, respect, understanding, and appreciation for my mom. She and I had a rocky relationship for a long time. But now I see us as one. She’s a goddess. And I’m a vessel to express feelings like that love.”

“I’ve had a few magic moments. Stepping onstage for the first time was definitely one of them. I felt so strong. Like singing— this is what I’m supposed to do. That first performance really stands out. Gathering myself. Going under the bright lights. And sharing my love of music.”

AXE Collectivemusician,Jack Freeman, on finding his magic:
“I was playing football in college. I woke up one morning and I said to myself, ‘I don’t really wanna play anymore.’ You show up at practice, work hard. I just wasn’t willing to put my body through it anymore. My love for the game had changed. But I’d always been able to sing. I’d never written a song or recorded anything. But when I see something I like, I just try it. From something as simple as jumping up on a wall to getting onstage and singing. I shifted from being told what to do and when, to saying 'I’m going to write music whenever I want.’ I’m very free form in that way. I don’t live by a lot of structure. I let the world and my songs just come to me. And that’s where the magic came to me.”

“When my best friend died, I didn’t know how to feel. He was Superman to me. I left a comment on his MySpace which turned into a poem, just an expression to let people know how I felt. And then from poetry to spoken word, spoken word to songwriting, I learned to rap. You know, everyone has vices. And music is my anti-drug. I love to live life. I don’t believe in selling a dream that I’ve never had. I reinforce how you gotta just keep it real. I do that in my music—just stay authentic to who I am.”
