The first thing that you noticed when you walked through the door of your apartment was the silence.
It was quiet.
Too quiet.
Normally, a pair of big black boots and a two-year-old’s light-up shoes would be scattered by the door. The air would smell of burnt food from Fives’ attempt to cook dinner after your shift or Ekko would come sprinting up to you with his thick little hands making grabbing motions, eyes full of happy tears as he would beg to be picked up.

You hated these days with every fiber of your being: Fives’s departure for deployment. You never knew when or if he’d come back, and the uncertainty of it all made it so much harder for you to face the mornings of his deployment. You were restless all night, plagued by nightmares of losing him to battle. But you never woke him, knowing this would be the last time before his mission that he would actually get a full night’s rest.
You’ve woken up like this many times before — sandwiched between your lovers, their identical hands groping and kneading your naked body beneath the twisted sheets. But this was the first time their needy touch woke you from a deep slumber in the middle of the night. You were exhausted after the activities from only a few hours earlier, when they had finally returned home from a long mission and joined you in bed.
