GENE CLARK RECORD STORE DAY SPECIAL RELEASE!!

Gene Clark, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee as a member of the Byrds, struck out on his own in 1966 but by early 1967 he was out looking for another label. These tracks are some of his efforts in recording as a solo singer/songwriter during that time. These recordings included backup by famous L.A Wrecking Crew (Leon Russell, Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine, etc.) along with special guest, Hugh Musekela.
The 180g vinyl records were pressed at Hand Drawn Pressings in Texas on the newly designed and manufactured ‘WarmTone’ automated presses. Packaged in a limited edition numbered silver foil jacket.

I’m sorry to report that Gene Clark was not among the list of names nominated for the 2018 induction into Songwriters Hall of Fame. Personally this is extremely disappointing for me but I do want to say “THANK YOU” from the bottom of my heart to all of my followers and all of you who have supported the petition and this campaign. There are so many of you to mention. I am sincerely grateful for all of your support and encouragement and most of all for your love of Gene and his music.

Released in 1987, Gene Clark’s collaboration with Carla Olson (formerly of the Textones) breathed new life into his career. The album’s straight forward approach of mainly acoustic guitars with minimal accompaniment brought forth the beauty of the songs and the pairing of Gene and Carla’s voices. Both artist’s contributions to the album are top shelf and work well together among cover songs by Woody Guthrie Gram Parsons and John Fogerty.
Standout tracks include “The Drifter” & “Are We Still Making Love?” (Olson) and “Gypsy Rider” & “Del Gato” by Gene (the latter co-written with Gene’s younger brother Rick Clark). Their version of the traditional song “Fair And Tender Ladies” is just beautiful to hear. Newer versions of the album include some excellent bonus tracks not included on the original.

Gene Clark Firebyrd, Takoma, 1984.
The 1980s were a challenging time for many 60s recording stars and Gene was no exception. Struggling to get a record contract when even commercially successful artists couldn’t get a deal, he was only able to release Firebyrd on the small indie label, Takoma Records. The album has an 80s production sound, but some tracks still have some appeal like “Rain Song”, “Rodeo Rider” and “Blue Raven”. Gene also does an interesting longer version of “Mr. Tambourine Man” rearranged with a piano and starting off with the first verse instead of the chorus. There’s a nice version of Gordon Lightfoot’s “If You Could Read My Mind” which shows Gene’s knack for interpreting other people’s songs. An updated version of “Feel A Whole Lot Better” was probably included to appeal to the 60s nostalgia market that was just beginning at the time and to remind everyone that he wrote the song. Taken in the context with other releases from his peers at the time, the album has its moments, but admittedly is not the best work of his career. It does show however, that Gene was trying to keep his career going even under difficult professional and personal circumstances. -
