- In the April issue of Animedia, Director Araki and Director Koizuka stated, “I guess you could say that Levi is the main character of season 3.” What does Nakatake-san think about this?
Nakatake: I think that’s absolutely correct - he’s pretty much at protagonist level. In terms of the story especially, he’s at the center of all the characters. We can also recognize once more how nimble his mind works. If a company has a boss like this, I think the results/output would be quite good. Even if the staff members might suffer hardships (Laughs).- According to Nakatake, the highlights of action scenes depicting humans vs. humans will be completely different from those against Titans.
- If you have new details on Mikasa that can be revealed for the first time, please tell us as well.
Nakatake: Mikasa…I’m aware of the fact that she likes Eren. This information, rather than being “brand new,” is more like something everyone already knows, right? No, we’ll give everyone a fresh understanding of this concept. All in all, please anticipate the Mikasa in season 3 who is constantly worried about Eren (Laughs).- Then, the Eren that’s loved by Mikasa, what are his highlights?
Nakatake: I keep hearing people being suspicious about whether Eren will have any highlights in season 3 at all…there definitely are! During our production process, there is an episode with a “showdown” type of development. Eren’s incredibly active in that episode! Eren’s seiyuu Kaji Yuuki was also concerned about Eren’s state, but I think that episode will have moments that will convince Eren’s fans.- Please also let us know some new details on Armin.
Nakatake: Of course, I hope everyone cares about how he will grow as a strategist. But at the same time, I have to recommend one scene. It’s the one where he’s being pressured by an older man. When you watch that, you will feel sympathetic towards Armin…but I feel like, especially for fans that observe this series from various perspectives, that scene should not be missed (Laughs). [T/N: Um…ok…??? This answer was uncomfortable to translate…]- Background Visual Description: Levi, who gets mad at Eren when he doesn’t clean well. Then there is Mikasa, who looks at Levi and gets really angry at him. If we imagine what will have next…it’s really scary.

Interview with SnK Directors Araki Tetsuro & Koizuka Masashi

Araki: It’s about the difference between his unfriendly, unapproachable appearance and what’s actually a warm, considerate heart within. To be honest, I feel like I could say this - Levi’s appeal was already expressed thoroughly in his debut scene.- So the sequence in season 1, episode 9.
Araki: His ability to counter Titans is #1, but he is also disgusted by the blood splatter and cleans it with a handkerchief - that showcases his germapobia and other personality traits. Immediately after, when he rescues his subordinate, he grasps the soldier’s bloody hand without hesitation. That “without hesitation” aspect was incredibly important in the anime. He then says, “I swear to you! I will eliminate all the Titans!!” This is already a highlight that’s beyond ideal…no, the one who thought of this wasn’t me, but rather Isayama-sensei. Everyone understands this, right? (Laughs)
Koizuka:(Laughs)
Araki: It’s really impressive - even back then I thought that this was a very spectacular moment. After that, I thought it would be impossible to not like Levi.
Koizuka: In season 3, we’ll witness the “human” side of Levi that he has yet to display. For example, even if it’s hard to tell on the surface, perhaps he also possesses a “considerate” side. Also, as we already illustrated, the weight of his years of collected experience is shattered by the younger generation. Up to this point, even though his position as Humanity’s Strongest and his extraordinary side has already been revealed to us, there are still more delicate parts within, where he carefully observes human behavior and intentions. He can stand in the shoes of the 104th to consider a problem, and he can also provide supportive words as their senior.
Araki: Also, up to now the fights have always been “against Titans.” But season 3 contains struggles “against humans,” including political upheaval. Thus, Levi’s immediate determination and realization about the enemy displays the difference between him and the 104th. From this, one can see that he is still way ahead of the 104th youth.
Koizuka: Indeed, you can feel the difference in mentality. In that case, season 3 is when the audience can receive a brand new sense of who Levi is.
Araki: Moreover, this “brand new sense” is also dependent upon Levi’s relationship with “that person” on the key visual…
