New illustration and interview with the directors (Araki Tetsuro xKoizuka Masashi) and the voice actors of Eren & Historia & Levi (Kaji Yūki x Mikami Shiori Kamiya Hiroshi) from Animedia August 2018

Interview with SnK Directors Araki Tetsuro & Koizuka Masashi
All translations by @suniuz&@fuku-shuuof@snknews

(Note: The seiyuu interview translation will come later!)

Season 3 is currently in production. How do you guys feel about it?
Araki:We just finished the first episode (As of the time this interview was conducted). It was done really well - it’s perfect (Laughs).
Koizuka:It really is a “perfect film.”

The first episode starts with Levi’s new squad. What’s that group like?
Araki:We begin the story with the relaxed lifestyle of the squad - the scene is similar to a modern school club. During the club gathering, Levi’s almost like a “monster coach” (Laughs). A while after, when everyone starts to struggle with the inner conflict, “You can’t live if you don’t kill other humans,” Levi will become that “monster coach” again, even requesting for them to “not hesitate” about killing. (Laughs)
Koizuka: Even though Levi is the strongest as a soldier, but I don’t think he is perfect as a person, as a superior, or as himself. His past also involves losses of both his subordinates and fellow comrades. However, it is exactly this imperfection and this theme of tragedy that allows Levi’s appeal to express itself thoroughly. He will also urge his subordinates to “Choose for yourself” - to determine paths on their own. His methods are unique, so perhaps he actually is a good leader in the end.

Regarding Kenny and Levi…
Koizuka:We can’t discuss their relationship as of this moment.
Araki: When Levi explains Kenny to his subordinates, he says in one scene, “Just pretend if I were the enemy.” This basically means that Kenny and Levi are on equal ground - and he might even be more skilled in battle than Levi. In terms of their relationship…I can only say, “Both love and hate exist.” All in all, their reunion will bear much importance to the story.
Koizuka: The focus of this season’s story revolves around political conflict, so the main characters are not the youth, but rather the adults. This also means that this season has a lot of episodes where the atmosphere becomes intensified by the intellectual dialogues of those adults. The seiyuu for that part of the cast are also all veterans [In the voice acting industry], so we’re going to experience how these veterans tackle dialogue, and how that adds to Shingeki no Kyojin’s appeal.
[T/N: The two directors then give a lot of praise to Kamiya Hiroshi (Levi) and Yamaji Kazuhiro (Kenny)’s performances]
Araki: My strongest memory of Kamiya-san is the recording of episode 2. Our action director Imai Arifumi’s 3DMG sequences were so spectacular that even Kamiya-san was in shock. He even asked us, “How do I properly reflect this kind of animation?”
Araki: In episode three, we will see a lot of Historia highlights where she describes her past. Mikami [Shiori]-san demonstrated such strong acting skills then. In the end, we used a concept of, “She shuts her heart from her 104th friends, answering impatiently as if she were being interrogated by the police.” For Historia’s conversation with Eren in episode 1, Mikami-san also utilized her abilities and provided a very impressive moment.
Koizuka: Eren’s lines were also terrific during that scene.
Araki: Yes, Kaji-san very much accepted the advice of Isayama Hajime, who was present at the recording and said, “Please be even less courteous [to her].” He was quite successful at being impolite (Laughs).

Eren has somewhat less scenes this season.
Araki: Indeed indeed. The schedule at the recording studio often didn’t even have Eren’s name on it [T/N: There might be entire episodes without Eren this season].

During the production of season 3, sometimes the animators would actually fight to work on a scene. Even if Araki and Koizuka haven’t given directives, there were already staff who asked, “Could I start on the action sequence in episode __?” This was the first time this happened in the history of SnK’s production. Koizuka also states that this is the first time he ever saw the Levi official art that appears alongside this Animedia interview - neither him nor Araki instructed for it to be made, so the staff just created the artwork on their own volition - this means everyone is paying close attention to Levi.

At the conclusion of season 2, there seemed to be a preview that said, “They then saw the ocean…”
Araki: Yes. Right now, we’re diligently focusing on how to create a terrific work of animation that segues into the moment they “see the ocean.” Our efforts now is our most important mission.

In other words, you’re extremely concentrated in the season’s production. I also feel less anxious about waiting for the new season.
Koizuka: The opening of episode one…I feel like it will surprise everyone.
Araki: The second episode will leave a completely opposite impression. The first episode will feel refined, while the second has a much rougher atmosphere.
Koizuka: In season 3, those who enter the story as antagonists will become beloved by the end.

Once again, this is only the interview with the directors, the part with the three seiyuu will come later!

New Season 3 illustration and another interview with Araki Tetsuro&Koizuka Masashi from the July issue of Animage

Highlights Translation of Animage July 2018 (Scans Above)

Interview with SnK Directors Araki Tetsuro & Koizuka Masashi
All translations by @suniuz&@fuku-shuuof@snknews

  • Araki: In Season 3, the battle Eren and co. confronts is against fellow humans, so their personal “righteousness” will be shaken. There will be self-doubts like “Is what I’m doing the right thing?”
Koizuka:The highlights in the story are as Araki-san says. On the other hand, in terms of animation, the hesitation and frustration [The characters go through] during those fights are central to the action sequences - and those are completely different from their feelings during Titan battles. Additionally, when a certain plot point unravels, we’ve included types of special effects that have yet to be seen in the SnK anime. Something ridiculously huge will appear, so we implemented different SFX.
  • Araki: In the source material, there is a sequence I’m personally anticipating the creation of. It’s when Eren struggles with his own “inferiority.” That portrayal of raw human anguish exceeds the emotions typically seen in shounen manga. I myself feel that the Eren who endures this inner conflict is more appealing than the one who screams, “I’ll eliminate all the Titans!” When I initially read that part in the manga, my appreciation for Eren increased tenfold.
  • Whether it is structural composition or animation, season 3 differs from the previous 2 quite a lot - it almost feels like an entirely new series. Whether it is Eren, Levi, or other characters, the production now focuses on their innermost attributes, and it will be quite clear that up to now, we’ve only understood them on a surface level. Even just looking at a key animation draft, it’s apparent that this is not a direct extension of the previous seasons.
  • Araki: When we discussed what the ending of season 3 should demonstrate with Isayama-sensei, his thought was something that was quite challenging to create. I thought, “Wow, if anyone can capture that, then they’re really impressive.” So I was quite excited. It’s a moment that will make the audience fidget in their seats, as if someone dragged a knife against the skin on their necks and broke through. Moreover…season 3 allowed us to enter a certain “forbidden territory.” It’s truly a stimulating piece of work that throws down the gauntlet.

Summary/Highlights Translation of Animedia June 2018 (Bottom Scans Above w/ Mikasa & Levi)

Interview with SnK Animation Producer Nakatake Tetsuya
All translations by @suniuzand@fuku-shuuof@snknews

  • Purple Text on Right: “Not limited to fighting titans, Humanity’s Strongest was also the strongest in actions against humans!!”
  • In the April issue of Animedia, Director Araki and Director Koizuka stated, “I guess you could say that Levi is the main character of season 3.” What does Nakatake-san think about this?
    Nakatake:
I think that’s absolutely correct - he’s pretty much at protagonist level. In terms of the story especially, he’s at the center of all the characters. We can also recognize once more how nimble his mind works. If a company has a boss like this, I think the results/output would be quite good. Even if the staff members might suffer hardships (Laughs).
  • According to Nakatake, the highlights of action scenes depicting humans vs. humans will be completely different from those against Titans.
  • If you have new details on Mikasa that can be revealed for the first time, please tell us as well.
    Nakatake:
Mikasa…I’m aware of the fact that she likes Eren. This information, rather than being “brand new,” is more like something everyone already knows, right? No, we’ll give everyone a fresh understanding of this concept. All in all, please anticipate the Mikasa in season 3 who is constantly worried about Eren (Laughs).
  • Then, the Eren that’s loved by Mikasa, what are his highlights?
    Nakatake:
I keep hearing people being suspicious about whether Eren will have any highlights in season 3 at all…there definitely are! During our production process, there is an episode with a “showdown” type of development. Eren’s incredibly active in that episode! Eren’s seiyuu Kaji Yuuki was also concerned about Eren’s state, but I think that episode will have moments that will convince Eren’s fans.
  • Please also let us know some new details on Armin.
Nakatake: Of course, I hope everyone cares about how he will grow as a strategist. But at the same time, I have to recommend one scene. It’s the one where he’s being pressured by an older man. When you watch that, you will feel sympathetic towards Armin…but I feel like, especially for fans that observe this series from various perspectives, that scene should not be missed (Laughs). [T/N: Um…ok…??? This answer was uncomfortable to translate…]
  • Background Visual Description: Levi, who gets mad at Eren when he doesn’t clean well. Then there is Mikasa, who looks at Levi and gets really angry at him. If we imagine what will have next…it’s really scary.
  • [Final T/N: The character profiles outright captioned Kenny as “Kenny Ackerman” - huge spoiler for non-manga readers…? ^^;]

Interview with SnK Directors Araki Tetsuro & Koizuka Masashi
All translations by @suniuz&@fuku-shuuof@snknews

- How do the two of you plan on capturing Levi’s appeal?
Araki: It’s about the difference between his unfriendly, unapproachable appearance and what’s actually a warm, considerate heart within. To be honest, I feel like I could say this - Levi’s appeal was already expressed thoroughly in his debut scene.

- So the sequence in season 1, episode 9.
Araki:
His ability to counter Titans is #1, but he is also disgusted by the blood splatter and cleans it with a handkerchief - that showcases his germapobia and other personality traits. Immediately after, when he rescues his subordinate, he grasps the soldier’s bloody hand without hesitation. That “without hesitation” aspect was incredibly important in the anime. He then says, “I swear to you! I will eliminate all the Titans!!” This is already a highlight that’s beyond ideal…no, the one who thought of this wasn’t me, but rather Isayama-sensei. Everyone understands this, right? (Laughs)
Koizuka:(Laughs)
Araki: It’s really impressive - even back then I thought that this was a very spectacular moment. After that, I thought it would be impossible to not like Levi.
Koizuka: In season 3, we’ll witness the “human” side of Levi that he has yet to display. For example, even if it’s hard to tell on the surface, perhaps he also possesses a “considerate” side. Also, as we already illustrated, the weight of his years of collected experience is shattered by the younger generation. Up to this point, even though his position as Humanity’s Strongest and his extraordinary side has already been revealed to us, there are still more delicate parts within, where he carefully observes human behavior and intentions. He can stand in the shoes of the 104th to consider a problem, and he can also provide supportive words as their senior.
Araki: Also, up to now the fights have always been “against Titans.” But season 3 contains struggles “against humans,” including political upheaval. Thus, Levi’s immediate determination and realization about the enemy displays the difference between him and the 104th. From this, one can see that he is still way ahead of the 104th youth.
Koizuka: Indeed, you can feel the difference in mentality. In that case, season 3 is when the audience can receive a brand new sense of who Levi is.
Araki: Moreover, this “brand new sense” is also dependent upon Levi’s relationship with “that person” on the key visual…
