The act of sex has had many names in the past. There’s fornication, making love, knocking boots, fucking, etc. Two of these terms, fornication and fucking, came about from the Roman Empire.

With the brothels full to bursting with whores and eager men, many couples freely copulated under the arches outside, called fornices, an activity which was later described as “fornication”.

The word “fornication” made its way to the Teutons, a Germanic tribe that lived in Jutland. The word eventually degraded into vokken, which was the origin of the modern word “fucking”.

*Note: The origins of the work “fucking” is still a mystery, and this is one of the many possible origins of the word. However, the idea that fuck stands for “Fornicate Under Consent of the King” is a myth.
