Mexico, the beach, they made it.
Surprisingly it was easy to drive right through the check point.
Mickey in a dress turned out to be a good idea.
The first several months were rough, keeping a low profile, and rationing Ian’s savings.
Then things started to fall into place, they landed in a small town on the shore.
Struck up a deal with the local pharmacist, Ian’s meds in exchange for helping move expired product.
Word got around that Ian used to be an EMT, and before they knew it, he was back to helping people.
They had a small hut on the beach were locals new they could get basic care.
Mickey got to wear his Hawaiian shirts and they drank tequila in the shade.
Yeah, they made it, happily in Mexico.
— not everybody just gets to blurt out how they fucking feel every minute.

the sun rises and peeks through the curtains— the thick ones mickey bought, weeks after moving in.
ian’s eyes open, slowly— and the first thing he sees is mickey is laying beside him, mouth parted with a stubbly chin. pink lips, soft breaths.
another year older. another year of loving him.
after a while mickey exhales, rubs his eyes— and gives ian a bleary, sleep-soft look.
“happy birthday.”
ian pokes him between the ribs. “didn’t get me anything, did you?”
mickey just gives a crooked smile.
“gonna have to wait and see, hot stuff. but first— c’mere.”
