▸ ▸ ▸ WHO AM I.

• • •   She’d always wanted to be the one in front of the camera, the one that everyone was focusing on, but, now that she had just that, and the lens was fixed on her, she came to realize she wasn’t quite as fond of the experience as she thought she would. Perhaps it was because she hadn’t had the time to perfect her accent, and she still sounded very much American, even going over words she’d repeated in her head time and time again. “Uhm… so, how does one do this? My name is Soojin, but… I haven’t used it in a long time. Usually, I just go by Kali! I’m 19, but… I think that’s 20 here? Honestly, this is still a little confusing to me.” She admitted, painted lips pursing into a cherry red pout. She’d took special care with her make-up, exactly because she hadn’t felt confident walking into this interview. “I’m a make-up artist, and a dancer – I’ve been dancing for more than ten years now, actually! I’m also very new here, though, so—mm… please forgive me if my pronunciation is bad. I’m still trying to get the hang of this.”

▸ ▸ ▸ WHY AM I HERE.

• • •   She hadn’t been able to breathe for a solid minute, while she’d been trying to introduce herself, but this question felt easier. Rubbing her palm against her cheek, for the first time in years not quite mindful of her make-up, she focused her attention on the interviewer, her eyes more animated now. “I want to be… more. Is that a silly thing to say? When I was young, my mom – my adoptive mom – she used to tell me that I was meant for great things. I think it’s one of those things that all moms say to their children, but it meant so much to me that she had such faith in me. And, well, I definitely disappointed her so far. I mean… if she’s watching, she must be disappointed. I haven’t always made the best decisions, and I think I’ve been settling for mediocrity most of the time, but I’d really like to do something for myself. And the stage, well—I’ve performed with my dance class before moving here. The stage is always addicting. It’s like a drug, in its own right.” Well, she knew a bit too much about that, probably. “I didn’t think about this before, but coming to Seoul, I found myself wishing I could be the one in the limelight, you know? I think my mom would be proud of me.”
