There’s nothing that I love more than singing. It’s all I ever seen myself doing, so please treat me well.”

• • •“My ambitions?,” he asks, eyebrows momentarily rising as he pursues his lips. Despite having expected the question, there’s nothing practiced about Minki’s response. It’s clear from the way he nervously licks his pink lips as he momentarily looks away. There’s a hundred different answers running through his head and it almost seems like he won’t answer - his pause bordering on too long. But then there’s a soft smile tugging at his lips as he looks back up at the camera. “I guess the straight answer is that I’d like to debut,” and he chuckles lightly, glancing up at the camera through his lashes almost as if he’s sharing a secret with the prompter. “But I guess you’ve heard that before,” he says, not waiting for answer before he continues. “I just want to sing,” he admits after a pause, something wistful in his eyes as his voice becomes softer. “I want to sing on the biggest stage so that my songs will be heard by everyone.”

This continues for a few seconds until the unidentified voice speaks up again “Are you in school? Do you have any hobbies? You don’t have to be nervous this is just a simple introduction to get to know you”. The teen hears but doesn’t comprehend and just nods a few times at the camera until the director yells cut.

→ The recording takes a two minute intervention for both Chanwoo and the crew to reconvene and collect themselves. “Okay, Chanwoo tell us what brings you all the way from Seoul to audition with us?” There is a pause before he answers and he can tell from the crews faces that they expected him to freeze up again. “ Well, ” he starts carefully, “ I’m here because I want to perform. I’m not good at a lot of things, but something that I’ve always had a passion for is singing and though I don’t have much experience performing I want to follow my passions” The director speaks up once again “So you want to follow your passions? What do you think sets you apart from the other hundreds of kids here or millions of kids in the world who want to do the same? What makes you special?” his answer is quick and matter of fact  “honestly, I don’t know”.

→ i love to sing. { she eyes the camera seriously as she clasps her hands together. } it’s the only thing i want to do it for the rest of my life. i’ll never get tired of it. that’s how much i love it. { her breath catches, and the realization that she has become too somber causes her to laugh sheepishly. } um, my mother was a singer, actually. she really had a beautiful voice. i…want to captivate people the way she captivated me. { the smile returns. she rests her hands on her lap, nodding towards the camera. } thank you, it was a pleasure.
