Charles Burnett‘s ability to capture the black everyday in a way only he can is one that was evident even in the earliest of his works such as this. Burnett’s approach to taking a documentary style to fictional work can be seen clearly here. His ability to give time to black space to be, is a legacy which can be seen echoed today in shows such as Donald Glover’s Atlanta for example. -

Darrel, a young Black autistic boy, convinces his mom to let him stay home alone so she can pursue a once in a lifetime opportunity. But when unexpected circumstances surface, he must find a unique way to cope with his meltdown alone.
As they get ready for the day, three young Black women discuss the public perception of their Blackness in relation to their cultivation of a strong sense of self. Wash Day is an intimate exploration into how private, domestic acts such as washing your hair or putting on makeup become a significant re-acquaintance with the body, before and after navigating the politics of one’s outwardly appearance.
