Animal of the Day!

Red-Lipped Batfish (Ogcocephalus darwini)

(Photo from The Verge)

Conservation Status- Least Concern

Habitat-Galapagos reefs; Coast of Peru

Size (Weight/Length)- 40 cm

Diet-Mollusks; Small fish; Crabs

Cool Facts- While you might look at this and think it’s a picture of your 75 year old neighbor Mrs. Smith, you would be wrong. The red-lipped batfish is a fish with legs. Well, not really legs but modified fins that allow them to walk across the floor of the ocean. Due to this amazing adaptation, batfish are poor swimmers and make easy targets for predatory fish. They tend to stick to shallow coral reefs that have plenty of food.

Rating-11/10 (A fish. That can walk. And it has lips.)
