Update on the baby northern goshawk shown in a previous post(and video).  This is a photo taken by a friend when the baby goshawk, now named Havoc, met a baby desert eagle owl (Bubo ascalaphus; also known as the pharaoh eagle owl or Savigny’s eagle owl), owned by a different friend of ours.

They don’t seem to know what to make of one another, but one thing is for certain, they are both freaking adorable.  I can’t get over it.

As you can see, Havoc is getting his feathers in.  I’ll try to keep you all updated as I either take more photos of my own or my friend sends them :)

The Westland-Hill Pterodactyl Mk V - an experimental tailless aircraft from 1935. The engine is a Rolls-Royce steam-cooled Goshawk. (h/t Arnold Ives)

British Captain G.T.R. Hill developed the Pterodactyl series in an attempt to develop a safer aircraft: many pilots lost their lives when their aircraft stalled, went into a spin and flew into the ground, and Hill wanted to develop a design which was resistant to stalling and spinning. Hill’s designs were inspired by the pioneer J. W. Dunne, who had previously developed stable aircraft in the form of tailless swept wings.

A perfect example of teamwork between these two; hawk and dog working in unison to hunt. Kai got scraped off the rabbit during the initial grab. It started to run off, but Malia came in from the side and cut off its path, turning it back towards Kai for the catch. I’m so glad I happened to be filming!

My boy, Kai. We’ve been together over 7 years now as he starts his 8th hunting season.

I started playing with oil pastels about a year ago, right before and while in lockdown. I’ve only had time for 4 serious pieces since starting, but I’m loving the medium so far and can’t wait to do more. These were all done with Conte a Paris oil pastels and Stabillo Carbothello pastel pencils on pastelmat paper.

1) Lanner falcon - done by following a tutorial from Jason Morgan

2) Cooper’s hawk on valley quail - original piece from personal reference photo

3) Aplomado falcon on chukar - original piece done on commission

4) Juvenile goshawk on scaled quail - original piece from a friends photo

Hey everyone! It’s been a while. Here’s Kai at the end of our most recent hunt.

My Aunt Julie loves meeting my birds my birds, and every Thanksgiving she takes her annual animal photos with whatever critters I bring home. This year she got to pose with Azel, Kai (who was feeling bratty lol), Zu, and Nicodemus. She’s a champion.
