It’s My Little Monday!
With…The Half-Pony Bag: Blossom!
Now, here’s an interesting old piece of merchandise. It’s not a half-penny-bag, it’s a half-pony bag. It’s a canvas tote bag, with exactly half a pony on it. It is an uncommon thing, and there were apparently more than just 1 character (in this case, it’s Blossom) used.
The half-pony here is very interesting to look at because it was created from a strange mold that only produces the right half of the pony. You can’t see it here, but, she has no neck seam, the head is not separate as it is with all other ponies. The legs are not fully formed, they are also half legs, as she only goes to a little past mid-point (see how the mane is in the close up) This IS life-size, she is the same size as a regular pony, and made of the same materials. She is held to the bag by sturdy threads that pierce through special holes in her close to the edge.
Is this a good idea? I guess it is? The pony doesn’t look wierd/deformed or unfortunate (as sometimes like…decapitated plush heads or other wacko ideas do) and it gives you a collectible bag that you could brush and style like a regular pony. In it’s day, in the 80s, ‘going green’ wasn’t as big of a deal so cloth totes weren’t everywhere or highly promoted.
I used to own this bag, but traded it away long ago for regular ponies because I am not particularly a merchandise collector. I don’t particularly regret it, though I do wish the camera at the time had been better in order to collect better photos of the bag. An interesting piece for My Little Monday!
