You and your husband had a routine at night. First shared dinner on the couch and some Netflix. Then separate showers, but shared brushing off your teeth. And then you both crawl back into your little corners of the house and do the things introverts do when they are alone. Which in your case was catching up with all your favourite Youtubers while doing relaxing yoga stretches. And in your husband’s case was music, be it write it, listen to it or make it.
And then one, sometimes two, hours later you meet in bed again, lying next to each other and looking through your phones and sharing perfect silence.
Then one of you would stop looking at their phone first and lie down to sleep. You would kiss the other on the lips and wish them a good night before rolling over and closing your eyes.
It was the perfect night time routine for you and your husband liked it too. It was calm and relaxing and with the right amount of shared domestic loveliness.
Tonight it was your turn to give up first. You place down your turned off phone on the nightstand and move to face your husband. He hasn’t noticed you yet, having his back turned to you and resting in his favourite position as he looks through his phone. Fatal position with his left hand lodged between his knees. It makes him look so small and tiny and you think he is very cute like that. You shimmy closer, draping your arm across his waist and cuddling into his back.
At that he reacts, purring deeply. He sneaks a short glance your way.
“I’m tired”, you tell him.
“Mhm-hm, do you mind if I stay on the phone a little longer?” he asks, putting his phone down for now. He turns in your arms just enough that he can look at you when you are speaking.
“Of course not”, you say and lean closer to peck his soft lips, “but I’m off now.“
“Okay. Sleep tight, beautiful”, he says, kissing your lips.
“You too, handsome”, you say, pecking his lips one last time before dropping your head into the pillows and burying your face into his hair.
You sigh happily and close your eyes. He is already looking into his phone again, features glowing blue from the display while his back is getting warmed up by your body.
Perfect. He is so warm and cuddly and smells so nice. This is the perfect way to fall asleep. Now all you need to do is relax and stop your brain from concentrating on his butt. It is so round and warm and snug against your crotch. Has it always been that round and warm and snug?
