From homelessness to happiness! #HBCUFASHION it is my distinct honor to introduce you all to one of the newest members of the HBCU family, Miss Jimeria Williams. @jimerialynn Behind this pretty face lies a young of woman of triumph and determination. For two years, beginning at the tender age of 12, Jimeria Williams found herself homeless. After the deaths of two grandparents and an uncle in a single year, funeral expenses left her mother penniless. For a while, they moved from home to home with different family members, and they even lived in a place that Williams considered to be more of a shack than a house. The entire time, Jimeria stayed in school in Leeds, AL, was crowned Miss LEEDER at the Miss LEEDER pageant and excelled academically by earning a 4.2 GPA. Williams has received numerous scholarships including the prestigious Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Millennium Scholarship, which is a full ride scholarship that she can use at the college of her choice! This coming fall, Jimeria will began her collegiate journey at Spelman College in Atlanta GA, majoring in Economics with a minor in Chinese. Considering the challenges this young woman has overcome thus far in her life, I am certain that no obstacles will govern her from accomplishing both her personal and professional goals. Upon completion of her collegiate studies, Jimeria plans to become an international analyst for the CIA. I truly admire her perseverance and success! Let us welcome her to the HBCU family! Please tag a #Spelmanite, #MorehouseMan or ANYONE who you think will appreciate this young woman’s story. #Spelman #Spelman18 #HBCU #GatesMillinneumScholar #Inspiration #Motivation #LookAtGOD #WontHeDoIt #HBCUBuzz #HBCUPride #HBCUPrideNation #SupportTheYouth To read more about Jimeria’s story please visit www.Blog.AL.com!

They take, and try to manipulate, re-create. Beautiful ghetto girls’ cornrows turned to “boxer braids”; Bantu knots from the Zulu tribes of Africa the Motherland turned to “twisted mini-buns”. See they put a white face on it and call it new, call it theirs. Honey, you can imitate all you want. You can take our styles, our facial features, our skin; but what you can never have is our aesthetic, our DNA. Our ancestors’ blood runs hot in our veins. When we do our hair, their spirits are guiding our hands; their voices whispering instructions into our ears. That’s blackness. Beautiful blackness. True black…ness.

Kent State University

“The Kent State shootings (also known as the May 4 massacre or the Kent State massacre)[3][4][5] were the shootings on May 4, 1970 of unarmed college students by members of the Ohio National Guard at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio during a mass protest against the bombing of Cambodia by United States military forces. Twenty-eight guardsmen fired approximately 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis.[6][7]

“There was a significant national response to the shootings: hundreds of universities, colleges, and high schools closed throughout the United States due to a student strike of 4 million students,[10] and the event further affected public opinion, at an already socially contentious time, over the role of the United States in the Vietnam War.[11]

Student strike of 4 million students! Let’s do that again lol

Same goes for HBCU Southern University. Nov. 16, 1972, after weeks of demonstrations by students protesting inadequate services. When the students marched on University President Leon Netterville’s office, Gov. Edwin Edwards sent 300 police officers in to break up the demonstrations. After smoke bombs were thrown at the students. One brave student threw it back toward the police and after police began to shoot into the building the smoke cleared with 2 20 year old students found dead

Leonard Brown and Denver Smith May you forever be remembered and reminders. #HBCUGrad #LangstonU

Over the past months since the ending of 2017 I’ve been preparing myself for the Miss Phi Beta scholarship pageant at my school Hampton University. The pageant was put together by the men of Phi Beta Sigma Inc. and it was an honor to be apart of it. The Pageant consisted of an opening dance including all my pageant sisters and I, my self-introduction, swimwear, talent, and questions. Overall I placed 2nd in as Miss Beta Gamma representing the chapter of the men of Phi Beta Sigma Inc. BUT I also left with another title as Miss Congeniality (an award recognizing my positive attitude/energy throughout the pageant). Honestly, this was one of the best things I’ve ever participated in I met and bonded with 5 beautiful souls who I am lucky to call my sisters for the rest of the time being. Also, I had some of the best coaches keeping a fire under my butt and believing in me along the way. Plus the support the night of the show was CRAZYYYY I was honestly shocked to the point to where I ended up in tears after seeing everyone. It was definitely a lifelong experience I’ll never forget and yet a huge boost of confidence and yet a lot of hard work. I challenge anyone to do it because I know you can!
