Cormorant dragon

I like drawing dragons pretty much but I didn’t draw them quite a while somehow.
Reviving an old, discarded design is super fun and also less burdened than creating a brand new one.

Bird person progress! Slowly getting somewhere. It’s currently a “default” bird person, with no real defining features, so soon I gotta start making decisions about what sort of character it’ll be. Hence the colour concepts.

Bird people are mine, please don’t use as ref (it’s not terribly accurate anyway!)

one Fancy Bird (lots of flowy silk, dangly jewelry, rather unpractical. Does Not need to do any manual labour) and a bunch of peasants (functional clothing, a few nicer bits if they can afford it, rough fabrics). They live on a continent that’s somewhat similar to Australia so it’s usually pretty warm. Here they are missing most of their feathers + wings

Bird people progress! I’m really happy with how the feathers are turning out. Much better than last time.

I started over on the bird people sculpt, and hey, Improvement! It’s currently looking naked and weird as I experiment with feathers. and I am Very Excited about it

More of my bird people! Figuring out plumage and some anatomy. This is just the ‘default’ state of feathers they can have, there are a lot of variations, especially regarding the head and tail.

Derived the Coriophan’s rough anatomy from the corioalarian base and it’s working well. Maybe it’s a little bit too bulky, I don’t know yet. And Joseph shows off his dancing skills for the sake of scale.

And a bit of playing with the Enprn before bed. I realized that they fit the storyline around the impact winter pretty well and I wanted to pull them back into 2020 ;-)

This workweek was something else in terms of pressure and it’s a relief to let strokes be what Iwant them to be. Kanerophan vs. Coriophan! The latter really does work as a species… at least I think that it looks fucking cool. x)

I wanted to sketch around on the Kanerophan, but the first doodle looked more like a bulky, land-adapted corioalar. So maybe the plains of Eneriss became an evolutionary playground for the rivalry between “Kanerophans” and “Coriophans”.

They walk on their modified wings and I don’t know what to do with their second pair of hands yet. It’d make sense to keep them since there’s no trunk helping in quickly picking up things, but they look a bit like a genetic mishap right now. Oh well, we’ll see. ;)

Took the last image and worked on the proportions - I think they’re much better now and fit their way of living. The colors are inspired by Lost World’s velociraptor (obviously) and a color combo from a miscolored Lion King artwork back in the 90s. Do you also know the “magical” feeling of some color combinations, especially from your childhood? The schemes from the two protagonists of the second Care Bears movie have a similar effect on me.

It’s a far cry from yesterday’s dynamic strokes, but it’s Friday night after a draining week. I also feel that I didn’t capture the shape I had in mind, but it was a relaxing painting time nonetheless. The next one’s going to fit better.

Wanted to quickly sketch out an idea for the troglodyte Kanerodoptrix and ended up with a little speedpaint of an evolutionary relative which returned to the surface and lives in the nearby Arithan desert. The female in the front has a mane while the male shows off some nice stripes.

From the train commute earlier this month. Joey developed the habit of playing the drums in underwear, especially in the morning. If you have to shower, make it count.

The drum kit itself didn’t make it in time, so imagine a cymbal near his right hand and the beginning of a stroke with the left ;-)

Had a bit of fun with a movie-ish sequence of the bonding moment between Senta and Neshtèra. Once in color and once in grayscale - both work well in their own ways.

Nesh is only inches away from piercing Senta and ending the story, but she hesitates when Senta just sighs and tells her, “Wait - I’ll show you”. Nesh is surprised to see mountain corio bite marks on her neck, and Senta says, “See, I know how it is. I don’t want to hurt you - but maybe I can help you hurt a little bit less.”

Loafed around after two intense weeks at work and felt like giving Photoshop a little spin. It’s Neshtèra, the same corioalar as on the last image. She sustains this injury in a fight with a pair of mountain corios who can be sometimes arsed to obey Senta’s foster-father, but they’re too opportunistic to turn down a fight against another corioalar.

From then on, Neshtèra’s flight is unstable and forbids her to return to the eastern lowlands for feeding. It’s either walking or dying up there, but Senta can’t live with the thought of losing a creature like her to her foster-father’s corio gang and tries to gain Neshtèra’s trust.

This is something I have on hand right now, it’s a sketch from this morning’s meeting. Senta (the young woman) and the corioalarian Neshtèra shortly before they turn their backs on Aritha and leave for the region of Fyrr.

Senta was born in Fyrr but lived in an Arithan foster home until things took a turn. Among those events, she earned Neshtèra’s respect and the corioalarian female paid it forward by bringing Senta back to Fyrr after all bridges were burnt.
