My thoughts on the latest Gou episode (19)

************SPOILERS*****************

Rika is totally in-character. And so is Satoko.

Why?

They’re both simultaneously showing what they desire most.

People are up in arms about Rika “abandoning” Satoko for high-society and for people she barely knows… but Rika is a traumatized child who looped for 100 years. She desired FREEDOM, and actively went after it like a feral animal. I’m She wanted nothing more than to be freed from being trapped in dead-end, hopeless situations for years. She’s finally free to make her own decisions without weighing on whether or not it will kill herself or others; selfishness is completely valid in her scenario.

Satoko is also valid. She’s been abused and had traumatic things happen to her as well. She desires nothing more than stability, familiarity and security. And her form of stability- Rika, her last form of family- has changed and essentially abandoned her right in front of her eyes.

Are both parties at fault for not communicating? Yeah.

Is anyone really guilty here? Actually yes and no.

I don’t hate what either is doing (although I have a bias towards Rika because she’s my comfort character). I empathize with both.

I just wish both would think of the other more. And communicate. Especially in Satoko’s case, because she’s coming off, IMO, more selfish than Rika. (That’s another can of worms).
