Human rights activist Gerda Weissmann Klein was born in 1924 in Bielsko, Poland. Klein was fifteen when the Nazis invaded her hometown,andthree years later, she was separated from her parents and sent to work in slave labor camps. She was the only member of her family to survive the Holocaust. In 1957, Klein published All But My Life, a memoir recounting these experiences. The memoir has since gone through more than thirty editions, and she has written several other books.She has worked with numerous charitable organizations and in 1998, co-founded one herself to promote tolerance, education, and community service. Klein has received many awards for her work, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
