I watched Hwayugi: A Korean Odyssey recently and despite all the bad special effects and that very disappointing ending I enjoyed the show a lot and did a super quick sketch because I’m still not over this drama.

I’m waiting for the moment Son Oh Gong completely snaps and goes full-demon mode that even the veins around his eyes becomes fiery. I prefer this molten-lava type of fire in his eyes to the red eyes we see in the drama and I hope SOG would eventually show this look. Not that the red eyes were bad but this, this is so damn hot! He looks like the devil incarnate.
Though, if this is full-battle mode, I understand why we haven’t seen it yet since OG hasn’t still met an enemy that would require him to get serious.

I’ve loved the original legend and novel of the ‘Journey to the West’ since I was little and Sun Wu Kong has always been my crush equal to heaven since I was 5. I’ve watched over many retellings from opera to movies (both animated and real actors) and TV series. And boy, Lee Seung Gi is so perfect as Oh Gong. Sometimes I can’t stop wondering whether if he had referenced from any particular performance or actor.
Anyway I’m pretty confident that Oh Gong will only have these lovely golden eyes seeing they have been staying true to his background. Long story short, after going to heaven to steal and gorge himself silly with the Sacred Peaches of Longevity from the Queen Mother’s Garden (they bloom once every thousands of years so this is bad, I K R), Jade Emperor’s Royal Wine and Longevity Pills from Laozi, Wu Kong proceeded to single handedly turn the entire Heavenly Palace and army upside down. This was the reason why he was placed in the Crucible and burned by Samadhi fires for 49 days. Also, because of everything that he had consumed, Wu Kong gained an indestructible body. Unfortunately for Laozi who had hoped the Monkey would turn into elixir or at least a few pills to replace the ones he had lost, he didn’t. Alas, as he opened the cauldron, all that greeted him were two blazing molten gold flickering balls and out Wu Kong jumped. He had gained 金睛火眼 which translates to 'Golden Pupils, Fiery Eyes’. Its a magical ability that allows him to see through all Demon’s disguises and sense all forms of evil. It is also depicted that he can see considerable distances when using them. And obviously, Wu Kong uses all his skills later on to protect his Master, Tang San Zang (known as Sam Jang in Hwayugi) as they face many obstacles together in their journey to collect the scriptures in the West.
Fun fact: The name Sun Wu Kong was given to the Great Sage when Tan San Zang freed him from his imprisonment of 500 years, from the infamous Five Finger Mountain. (Buddha had made a bet with him, saying if he could run out of his palm he could go scot free for his terrible crimes. Which he failed, so Buddha changed his palm into a mountain and slammed Wu Kong under it)
I could go on some more but goodness no. I’m worried you have fallen asleep already - haha xD
Closing off, I really just wanted to share this and the fact that they have honoured so many details from the original story has made me so incredibly happy. Can’t get over how excited I am to see this future episode for real. Thank you for reading (:
