#hyouka
Earlier I said I didn’t know of any other translations of Hyouka, but I am happy to announce that you can find the whole series on baka-tsuki here: http://www.baka-tsuki.org/project/index.php?title=Hyouka
I will be continuing my translation anyway, because it’s mostly for my own benefit and because I think my interpretation will be different. But I wanted to give you all the options available to you.
Thanks for reading!
Notes from Hyouka: The Niece of Time chapter 1:
The letter is addressed to 折木奉太郎殿 (Oreki Houtarou-dono), which is the highest form of honorific. I assume she was using it sarcastically, so I used something that sounded similarly ludicrously grandiose.
In Japan, Varanasi is written as ベナレス (benaresu); Tomoe was suggesting バラーナシー (baraanashii) as an alternative.
Kamiyama means “god mountain,” if you were curious.
Classical literature club is written as 古典部 (Koten-bu), meaning a club for literature written in ancient literary Japanese, Koten/Kobun. This post does an excellent job explaining Kobun, if you’re interested: http://www.tofugu.com/2014/02/12/an-introduction-to-kobun-classical-japanese-and-how-to-read-it/
That’s all for now. Thanks for reading!
1: The letter from Varanasi
To the esteemed Master Houtarou Oreki,
Greetings,
Right now I am in Varanasi. In Japan, a lot of people write it as “Benaresu,” but wouldn’t “Baranashi” be closer to the pronunciation used here?
Houtarou, this is an amazing city. More than anything else, it’s a city of funerals. I mean, there are funerals happening constantly. It seems like no matter who you are, if you die here, you can go to heaven. I wonder if that’s true. Oh right, the proper Buddhist term is ‘escape samsara,’ I’ve been told. That means, effectively, becoming a hermit. In China, training is required to escape the cycle of reincarnation, but here you just have to die and you’re OK.
The Chinese sure have it rough, huh?
It’s a little late, but congratulations on getting in to high school. I mean, it’s just Kamiyama High. It’s not a very interesting choice, but anyway, congratulations.
As your older sister, I will bestow upon you one piece of advice on becoming a successful high school student.
Join the classical literature club.
The classical literature club is the traditional liberal arts extracurricular of Kamiyama high school. And, whether you know it or not, also the club I was in.
According to what I heard, my classics club has had no new recruits for three consecutive years, and the current number of members is zero. It seems that if no one joins this year it will automatically shut down. As an alumnus of the classics club, I couldn’t bear to see this happen. However, if a new recruit joins this April, that’s another story. Houtarou, protect the site of your sister’s youth, the classics club. For now, you can just put your name on the member list.
And it’s not really that bad a club. You’ll see when autumn rolls around.
Anyway, it’s not like you had any other plans, right?
When I get to New Delhi I’ll give you a call.
Love,
Tomoe Oreki

( Houtarou Oreki )
Houtarou is an apathetic, cynical and calm person. Along with his passive demeanour, Houtarou seems to always “conserve energy” and never exerts effort on anything unless absolutely necessary; thus coming off as sluggard. hyoukawiki
