- inkstay’s April prompt | what are mermaids really like?

they have the ocean in their veins and saltwater in their lungs.

they are girls that breathe gentle eddies in their laughter and tsunamis in their anger. they always travel in packs, too loud laughter, and long reaching limbs always intertwined, the concept of personal space so ambiguous to girls that have so much to see. they love with their arms around each other’s neck, fingers tangled together. they love through snarls if one of their own gets hurt, through glinting eyes and sharp fists that sing across bones. they know wonder and heartache when they still their domain and swim to the edges of cities in the dark, fascinated with the incandescent glow and how it dances with their shadows across the water.

they know happiness as they race along deep currents, and loneliness that only the darkest depths can speak to, and a love so pure, found only in each other’s arms.
