I just want everyone new to Dracula and reading Dracula Daily to note that you are getting to read this novel in a weird and wonderful way that its author absolutely did not intend. This is not a straight serialization of the text. Dates skip around in Draculaas it is written, moving the reader backwards and forwards in time to help shape the specific narrative Bram Stoker wanted to tell. We all will–in fact–be skipping ahead some chapters in a few days to meet another narrator only to skip immediately back to catch up with our collective friend Jonathan Harker.

And I think this is rad! I think it’s amazing to have a bunch of readers who are reading this book–not as Bram Stoker wrote it–but in a way that conforms to the steady march of events within it. This is a unique opportunity in that you guys don’t get to shape your reactions in relation to things you know will happen later. You can’t have your dread or anticipation undercut by future events.

Like all the characters you’re going to meet, you just have to wait for Dracula to act upon you.

Reminder that switching to Firefox is incredibly easy and takes just a few minutes, you WILL be able to copy over all your cookies, browsing history, logins etc, as well as change the look/layout so it feels like what you’re used to.

chrome does suck ethically and just functionally but I still thrilled at watching internet explorer get demolished in this. Let’s make sure someone can someday make the same video but with Google caving in.

Just finished binging the BBC comedy Ghosts and, from a world building perspective there are some interesting implications…

(I don’t expect the writers to flesh any of this out, or to even care about these particular things. My brain just grabbed some pieces, went “neat!” and smashed ‘em together)

So, we know ghosts can experience some sort of sensation as passing through a living person (even partially, such as a hand through an arm) causes discomfort and nausea. And it’s implied they can smell things, but not feel temperature.

Then there’s the fact that they can sit and lie on things (like chairs, beds, the roof, etc), but pass through walls and furniture when walking (or leaning). A joke is even made about it in S3. Add in Robin’s and Julian’s abilities to affect the physical world, the Plague Girl’s ability to be heard by the living, and Lady Button’s ability to be captured on film, and it’s not too far fetched to think that a) the ghosts do physically interact with the world, and b) what they do and do not interact with is partially determined by their own subconcious expectations

Then, in S3, Allison is able to talk to them on the phone, which, again, implies they are physically interacting with the world (the phone has to be picking up something that then gets transmitted to the other end).

(And if you want to point out that Pat and Thomas weren’t recorded when they tried with the ghost hunters in S1, well… I wonder if Allison would have heard what they’d said if she’d listened to the recording)

So… what if they installed some sort of smart home system? The devices should be able to detect the ghosts’ commands, thus allowing them to change the channel, play music, browse the web, and other activities without having to rely on Allison’s assistance.

Also, given that sense of taste is largely impacted by sense of smell, it’s theoretically possible they could “eat” strongly flavoured food by passing the item through their mouth. (Because, again, they experience some sensation when passing through things, and the psychosomatic expectation of tasting food would require it to be “eaten”)

Anyway… those are some random thoughts I had.

Anybody else watched the show and developed theories about the ghosts and how they can interact with the world?
