Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675 Dutch), Woman in Blue Reading a Letter, 1663-64
December 15 1675, Dutch Artist, Jan (Johannes) Vermeer passed away at the age of 43.
He specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. Worked slowly and with great care, using bright colours and sometimes expensive pigments, with a preference for lapis lazuli and Indian yellow. He is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work.
Since his passing, Vermeer has become a world-renowned artist, and his works have been hung in many prominent museums around the globe. Despite how much he is admired today, Vermeer left behind a small legacy in terms of actual works—approximately 36 paintings have been officially attributed to the painter.

Restoration of a Vermeer’s painting-new in history (8/?)
In a recent restoration of a Vermeer masterpiece, an image of Cupido was restored. While it was already longer know that an image of Cupido was painted over, recent research proved it wasn’t painted over by Vermeer, but in a later stage. This recent restoration now shows the painting as it was intended by Vermeer. (x)
