why katharine hepburn is so important

katharine hepburn: one of the greatest women of the twentieth century, feminist icon, and talented actress

katharine hepburn was one of the first women to wear pants and menswear in film during the 1930s and dressed as a man complete with a masculine haircut and moustache in Sylvia Scarlett (1935).better looking than most men i know…

she inspired many women to wear pants in public by showing women that you don’t need to wear a dress to look beautiful.

katharine hepburn never attended the oscars, despite winning four and being nominated an additional eight times, with the exception of one occasion when she presented an oscar and wore pants to the event in typical kate hepburn fashion.

and she showed, not only in her films, but in her real life that she would take shit from no one.

so next time you wear pants, thank katharine hepburn and the other women that came before you.

feminism in film and television 1930s-1970s

this is not a complete list, feel free to add on. just people i like and shows i watch, reblog with your favorites too.

Katharine Hepburn

katharine hepburn has more oscar wins than any other individual with four wins and twelve nominations. hepburn never attended the oscars when she was nominated. in the 1930s, hepburn popularized pants on women in public when it was still looked down upon.

Audrey Hepburn

audrey hepburn (no relation to katharine) popularized short hair and the use of menswear by women in the 1950s. audrey left her career in acting to work for UNICEF with a salary of one dollar a year until her death in 1993.

Mary Tyler Moore

mary tyler moore, star of the dick van dyke show andthe mary tyler moore show, was the first woman to regularly wear actual pants on television, most credit this to lucille ball of i love lucy, but mary tyler moore wore pants so often on the dick van dyke show, sponsors limited her to “one pants scene per episode”.

That Girl(1966-1971)

a comedy show about a girl named ann that moves to new york city to become an actress. the series finale was going to be about ann getting married to her boyfriend, donald, but marlo thomas (the actress that played ann) didn’t want the show to give the message that marriage was the ultimate goal in life.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970-1977)

the mary tyler moore show is about a woman that moves to minneapolis after breaking off an engagement. mary has brief relationships but ends the show a single woman. the show tackled many hot topic issues in the ‘70s including equal pay, homosexuality, and addiction. the show is rated as one of the top ten television shows of all time.

Mary Poppins(1964)

mary poppins may be regarded as a children’s movie, but it was my, and many others’, first exposure to feminism.
