Friends! What you see might be the EARLIEST officially released Pokémon illustration ever.

It’s a Game Freak 1993 New Year postcard by Ken Sugimori found and scanned by the awesome collector http://instagram.com/hapycakeoven A truly exciting discovery. This does not pre-date Capsule Monsters, this card might represent the first time Game Freak showed Pokémon to the public. It surely is the earliest published picture to date. As you might know, these cards are usually in colour, so let the hunt for the original begin!

More details in HapyCakeOven’s original post (I got his permission to clean it up and retweet it) HERE!

1998, Brock (タケシTakeshi)the Gym Leader of Pewter City by Ken Sugimori for the expansion Gym Heroes (ジム拡張第1弾 リーダーズスタジアム), scanned by us and enhanced by the kind @pinkgermy! An amazing Pokémon Artist, go and follow her account now both here and on Twitter.

1999, Blaine (カツラKatsura)the Gym Leader of Cinnabar Island by Ken Sugimori for the expansion Gym Challenge (ジム拡張第2弾 闇からの挑戦), scanned by us and enhanced by FLECKABEN!

I really like that old water color style that Ken sugimori did in the 90s. I always thought it was very unique as a kid. So I tried to mimic it by drawing heracross! One of the most bad ass bug types.

Another mockup of a 3D Pokemon game done in the style of the early promotional art by Ken Sugimori, created by Twitter user Pokeyugami.
