I really just want to have a talk with Kim Eun Sook about TKEM. I’m sure she had many many thoughts about how the story should go and I want to hear them all. I want to know her reasons for every scene she chose to include

This was a draft but I still stand by it…so many questions I have about the show in general and her intentions that I’ll never have the answer to.

Same. I wish we had the opportunity to chat with Korean screenwriters like we do with some Hollywood ones. I’ve had shows where I have literally dropped Tumblr asks and showrunners responded. I have soooo many TKEM questions, too. Some for clarification, others to understand the choices made, but also just to know more details on anything and everything about this show I love.

The King: Eternal Monarch 더킹 : 영원의 군주 is one of the most anticipated K-drama  this year only because of its writer, Kim Eun-Sook 김은숙 who has a lot of greatest hits like Descendants of the Sun 태양의 후예, Lovers in Paris 파리의 연인, Mr. Sunshine 미스터 션샤인, Goblin : The Lonely and Great God 쓸쓸하고 찬란하神 도깨비 etc.

It is a fantasy romance story of two parallel universes — one in which Korea is a constitutional monarchy, and the other one similar to present-day Republic of Korea.

Lee Gon 이곤 (Played by Lee Min-Ho) is the ruler of the Korean empire who tries to close the doors to a parallel world which was opened by demons. He happens to move to the other world and meets a female police officer named Jung Tae-Eul 정태을 (played by Kim Go-Eun) who tries to protect the people and the one she loves.

In the trailer, you can see an Asian-style pipe / flute as a medium of the two parallel worlds. This flute called Man-pa-sik-jeok 만파식적 萬波息笛 really existed according to Korean history books, and its name means “the flute that removes all the blues of the world and makes it peaceful”. The flute was given by a dragon king and used in the royal ritual during the unified Silla period (AD 676-935) to pray for peaceful world. However, it doesn’t exist now, and the artifacts related to the legend have not been found yet. Therefore, many people are questioning whether it really existed or not.

Studio Dragon, the production company of this drama, has signed a 3-year deal with Netflix. It means, in the next 3 years, the company’s k-dramas will be broadcast almost simultaneously on Netflix.
