I rolled my eyes as I snatched the badge off of my shirt and slammed into his hand. I hated working here anyway. This place had nothing but whores and perverts coming through here. It felt like a brothel more than a bar. I gave him a ‘fuck you’ as I left the building. I only had this job for a good 3 months. Something to just keep the lights on.
I nodded my head as Keyshia Cole blasted through my headphones. I’ll just have to find another one next week. I swear I have worked damn near everywhere in New York at this point. I hummed and tapped my foot as a pregnant woman stepped onto the train. We smiled at each other as she looked around for a seat. I realized none of these raggedy men were going to move for her, so I stood up and let her have mine. She thanked me and sat down. I grabbed the railing as the train started back moving. My phone vibrated and I looked down to see my best friend, Paige, had sent me a text message.
-Heyyy, Wanna go to Mario’s party tonight?
-Fuck Mario and I can’t anyway. Gotta baby sit LJ.
-Lol. Let me know if you change your mind. He misses you
-Yea yea
Mario is an R&B singer, who just so happened to be my ex-boyfriend. He was upset I didn’t ‘give it up’ to him. I was still a virgin, and I wanted my first time to be special. I’m 19 years old and not looking for something that was gonna be temporary, I wanted to be in love. I broke up with him when he tried to guilt trip me into sleeping with him.
I continued to hum when I felt a hand brush up against my ass. I turned around to see this dude looking the other way. I ignored it and turned back to my phone. It happened again and I yanked my earphone out. He was once again looking off but I know it was him. I frowned up as I pushed him with my finger aggressively.
“Look, I don’t know what your deal is but stop with that alright?”
He looked at me confused.
“Excuse me? I didn’t touch you”
“I didn’t say anything about you touching me so you’re making yourself look guilty”
He put his finger up in my face as people looked on.
“Look BITCH, I didn’t touch your hoe ass. Now chill the fuck out”
“BITCH?!”
“You heard what I said.”
The train came to a stop, and everyone started getting off. I turned around to exit and he grabbed my ass again. Before I knew it, I had slapped him hard. He yanked me onto the platform and started choking me. People just walked pass us as I was trying to pry his hand from around my neck. I know this is New York and this is ‘normal’ for us but what the hell. I was starting to cry as he squeezed harder. This pervert was about to strangle me to death in plain sight.
“HEY! LET HER GO!”
The pervert let me go as we both looked at the stranger. He was tall and very attractive.
“This yo bitch?”
He looked at him and sat his bag down.
“Disrespect her again and we’re gonna have a problem”
The pervert scoffed as he pushed me to the side and stepped up to the stranger.
“What the fuck you gonna do about it, you professor looking ass n*gga?”
The stranger smirked as he took his jacket off and placed it neatly on top of his bag. The pervert tried to throw a punch, but the stranger blocked it. He uppercut him and the pervert fell back into a pile of trash. He was knocked unconscious instantly. People around cheered and laughed as the stranger gathered his things and walked over to me. I wiped my face as he stopped in front of me.
“Are you alright?”
I nodded my head.
“Good. Here, take this”
He put his jacket over me and smiled.
“What’s your name beautiful?”
“Kimberly. You?”
“Chadwick”
“That’s an interesting name.”
He smiled and nodded his head.
“Yea I guess it is. Well anyway, I have to get going. Maybe I’ll see you around.”
I smiled as he put his bag on his shoulder.
“Yea, maybe”
He winked at me as he turned around to walk away. I wrapped the jacket around me. It smelled nice, just like it’s owner.
I opened the front of our (small 3 bedroom) apartment to see my mother, Shonda, passed out on the couch with a half empty bottle of Taka Vodka and pineapple juice laying on the floor beside her. I rolled my eyes and slammed the door. She jumped up and rubbed her eyes. She sat up and lit her cigarette.
“Don’t be slamming fucking doors in here”
I didn’t say anything as I walked to my room. She gets on my nerves so bad. She drinks our money away and acts so confused when there is nothing to put on the bills. She wasn’t always like this though. She used to be a video vixen and my dad was a video director. She’s a beautiful woman, just careless and irresponsible. They broke up when she got into drugs heavily. Now my dad is like some so called black activist and living in New Jersey. I have 4 siblings. My twin, Kelly, is in between jobs right now. Her and her son, LJ, is living with us right now along with my little sister, Kelsie. The only one not in the house is my brother, Darrel. He moved out when his ex-girlfriend, Joyce, got pregnant with my niece, Brianna. I go over his place every once in a while, just to hang out.
I opened my bedroom door and belly flopped on my bed. I heard little footsteps and my 2 year old nephew jumped on my back.
“You howme!”
I laughed as we rolled over and started wrestling. My mom yelled from inside of the living room.
“Shut up all that damn noise. American Idol is on!”
I rolled my eyes and I hugged LJ.
“We’ll play later bud”
He nodded his head and walked out of the room. Kelly walked in and smacked me on the butt as she sat down on the bed.
“Mario called for you today?”
“Did you tell him to go to hell for me?”
She burst out laughing.
“No.”
“You should’ve”
She leaned back on the headboard as I sat up.
“I almost got killed today”
“What?!”
“Yea some weird ass dude tried to grope me and I wasn’t having it and he tried to choke me.”
“And nobody helped you?”
“One man did. He was fine too. Very gentleman like”
She smiled at me as I grabbed my phone.
“Awe, a knight in shining armor. Did you get his number?”
“Girl, no”
“Maybe you’ll see him again”
“Funny cause he said the same thing”
“See that’s a sign”
I playfully rolled my eyes as she laughed.
“You talked to LJ’s dad lately”
She shook her head.
“The bastard won’t return my calls”
Before I could give my opinion, the lights cut off on us. My mother shouted a loud “Shit!”. Me and Kelly looked at each other and sighed. Kelsie, our 8-year-old sister, screamed and ran into our room with LJ in tow. Kelly stood up and grabbed the baby.
“Guess we’ll head down to dad’s. You coming with us Kay?”
I shook my head.
“Nah, I’ll go to Darrel’s”
She nodded as she grabbed Kelsie’s hand and walked out. This was a common occurrence for us now. Mom would skip a bill or not tell us and then we’ll be without until we have the money. I won’t get my last check until next week. I grabbed my bag and followed everyone out the door. Our mother lit candles and grabbed a beer out the fridge.
“There ya’ll go leaving me high and dry again. ¡Aléjate esta vez! (Stay away this time!)”
We didn’t say anything as I slammed the door behind me. She says that every time we leave. We’ve learned to ignore it at this point.
I made it to Darrel’s house late, but I told him in advance that I was coming. I knocked on the door and Brianna opened it up for me. She was somewhat small for a 5 year old, but she was far more intelligent than any other kindergartener I’d ever come across.
“Aunt Kay is here daddy”
I smiled as I picked her up.
“And why are you still up?”
My brother came from the living room with a bl*nt in his hand.
“Yea that’s a good question. Bed. Now”
Brianna frowned as I sat her down.
“Goodnight BB”
She mumbled a goodnight as she disappeared around the corner. My brother sighed as he rubbed his head.
“Your pillows and cover already on the couch. I’m going to bed”
I nodded as he went to his room. I took a shower and got comfortable on the couch shortly after. My phone vibrated to Paige sending me another message.
-Wanna do something fun tomorrow?
-Like?
-Let’s take an acting class
-For what?
-Just to do something lol It’s the summer Kay

-I guess I’ll occupy you
