Day 9: Ramayana

~

You will betray Rama for a woman.

Lakshmana hears the prophecy at Sita’s swayamvara. It’s hurled at him from some passing bard, likely from the kingdom of one of the failed suitors. The scoundrel glares at him, before turning his sneer upon the eldest princess of Mithila, and his meaning is apparent.

Known for his devotion, his loyalty, his valour, and his temper, Lakshmana is Lord Rama’s younger brother, believed to be an incarnation of Sheshanaga/Adishesha/Anantashesha - King of the nagas; the thousand headed snake associated with Lord Vishnu.

He’s married to Sita’s younger sister Urmila (believed to be an incarnation of Naga Lakshmi), and yet he faithfully follows his brother Rama and Sita into the forest for their fourteen years of exile, willing to give up his sleep, his comfort, and his life, for them. He plays a pivotal role in the events of the Ramayana; Surpanakha’s insult, Indrajit’s death, and though not present in the original text - the Lakshman Rekha. In fact, it’s for him that Hanuman lifts up the Mountain Dronagiri to obtain the Sanjeevani herb that would save his life.

While not much is known about his character, I’d highly recommend these fics if you’re interested (1)(2)(3)

In DD Ramayana, there’s a cute bit when Lakshmana wakes up after being given the Sanjeevini herb, and Rama is so happy with relief that he refers to Lakshmana as Bhaiyya, despite being older.

Lakshmana’s reaction is also so very him— the first thing he says when he wakes up is, “Where is Meghnad??? Where is that sorcerer? Where are my bow and arrows??”” and Rama has to tell him “You’re not on the battlefield, and here are your weapons.”
