Master of the house isn’t my favourite les mis song but I do love that it preps the audience to see Thénardier as the funny haha joke cartoon villain only for him to pop out up in the sewers singing about how god is dead and life can only mean trampling on other people and the implication that yes what happened in the barricade was terrible and sad but not as terrible and sad as a society that forms a man like Thénardier.
And this is why I dislike Thénardier actors who play Dog Eats Dog for laughs (looking at you, Thénardier in the UK tour). That’s a chilling song, and it shouldbe.
Is it just me, or do the performers on the new West End production of Les Mis sound very…. poppy? They’re not bad singers, by any means, but especially Fantine attacks notes and does ornaments that sound right out of a Top 40 song…. And all their voices aren’t full enough, it all sounds kinda hollow. It’s really throwing me off!
