It’s so weird talking to people who’s view of “here’s the way life is for everyone” is shattered as soon as they talk to someone with disabilities (physical, mental illness, any). Like you’ll say you’ll have a problem and instead of helping you they’ll argue with you about how you’re not actually facing that problem. Like,

Me:Hey, I’m really struggling to find a job and a part of it is my resume. I was depressed & psychotic during highschool so I didn’t do anything to gain skills or achievements to put on my resume. I also don’t have anyone to put as a reference. What can I do?

Them: You can add your skills, hobbies, clubs you’re in, and different volunteer work you’ve done! You can also get your teacher as a reference.

Me: I already know what to put on a resume, my issue is that I don’t have things that I can use. Also, I’m in my mid 20s so I don’t know if I can put my highschool teacher as a reference.

Them: Well if you’re a part of a church or an activity group, you could add that. Also, think of any projects you’ve worked on in the past.

Me: I already know you can put these things on a resume. I’m not looking for suggests of things I’ve already done, I’m looking for what I can do now if I haven’t done anything.

Them: There’s no way you didn’t do anything during highschool?? What about some odd jobs you definitely did for extra money, like babysitting or mowing the lawn?

Me: I spent all of highschool either in modified classes or in bed doing nothing - not even hobbies, what about that do you not understand?

And then you talk to someone who’s also disabled and they’re like “Here’s a bunch of jobs you can do from home that don’t pay much but look good on a resume, here’s some free online courses that also look good on a resume, here’s how you can be making small amounts of money in the meantime, here’s some things you can put besides a professional reference, and here are your rights if your future employer tries to take advantage of your disability - which you probably shouldn’t tell them about unless you need accommodations.”

And suddenly my will to continue trying returns!

c…can we maybe get some of those ideas in full? Pls?

Two other people asked as well so okay! Though this post will be rather long.

Freelance Jobs You Do From Home That Look Cool On A Future Resume

Please research any company before sign up with then. So many companies are scams and pay you way less than you deserve for your work. Go to r/freelancers and search to make sure nobody has had some horrid experiences. There’s also usually reviews of a company on YouTube as well.

  • Transcribing - adding subtitles to videos for deaf and other hard of hearing people. You usually read a big instruction manual, do two or three tests to see how well you can follow the instruction manual, and then get an e-mail if you can work with them or not. Depending on where you sign up, you can also fill out which topics you’re knowledable on and less likely to make mistakes on when transcribing.
  • Translating - same as transcribing, but now you’re translating one language into another. I have not done this before, so I’d suggest talking to people who have.
  • Article Writing - there are different websites you can sign up to work for where someone sends in a request for an article about a certain topic, you can write that article, and if they like it they can purchase it from you. Some websites have a ranking system where the more good reviews your article gets, the more money you’ll get paid.
  • Article Editing - you can also get payed to fix typos and reorganize an article (or list) if writing isn’t your thing.
  • Top 10 Lists - There are different sites that will pay you to write 10 ten lists. They usually require a specific amount of words and have an author’s guide on their site.
  • Graphic Designer - if you go to different generic freelance websites, you can often find people who are searching for someone to design logos for their company or banners for their websites. It helps if you have a portfolio as well.
  • Virtual Assistent - scheduling appointments, answering calls, and managing email accounts from your own home. I haven’t done this one so again, do more research.

Small Amounts Of Money

  • Qmee - I’ve been using this app for awhile called qmee where you do surveys for money. Surveys usually pay anywhere in between 30 cents and 2 dollars, and they have a feature where if the survey asks you anything sketchy then you can report them. You can also cash out whenever, like you don’t have to build up a certain amount. (If you aren’t American, you may only get a couple surveys per day.) An extra 20 dollars a month isn’t much but it’s nice.
  • Fiverr - A website where you state your talents and you can take on other people’s smaller projects for small amounts of money. A funny example is this YouTube skit where someone paid some people on fiverr to come up with a break-up letter. I believe you can also keep a portfolio for any projects you make during your freelance jobs on fiverr too.
  • Redbubble - this is where you can put different designs onto different types of clothing, notebooks, mugs, hats, etc. It helps if you have a design that’s from a fandom, references a meme, or fufills a niche. You can also go to TeeSpring if you want to put multiple designs on one item, but you’d have to promote your items yourself as TeeSpring has this issue where you can’t search for new stores who aren’t already popular.
  • Test Products - once again, please research any company you’re going to do this for. There are companies that will send you products for a week or two and ask for a report on how well it works, what you like/dislike, etc.

If You Don’t Have Anyone To Put On Your Resume As References

  • Volunteer Somewhere - animal shelters, tutoring, soup kitchens, summer programs, public libraries, etc. If you’re able to volunteer somewhere, you can ask the people there if you can use them as a reference.
  • Volunteer Online - you can also do online volunteer work if you’re unable to do physical volunteer work. Here’s a list of examples of online volunteer work which includes things like creating a large amount of thank-you cards, transcribing books into digital form, or answer texts or calls on a crisis line. This may be a better option due to covid.
  • Add Personal References - friends and family members do work (just don’t list them as professional references). It’s especially helpful if you’ve done a project for/with them as well.
  • Or don’t add references at all - references look good on a resume, but unless you’re writing a federal resume you kind of don’t need them? If someone is interested in hiring you, they may ask if you have any references. You can just say “no, this is my first job” (if it is). They might ask why you haven’t worked before, but you can just say that it’s personal or private information. Or you can give a vague answer like dealing with family matters.

Once you have some, this is how you would format your references.

None of these are long term solutions and not everything will work out for everybody. These are just helpful suggestions I’ve received over the years!

A note on “predictable” storytelling

I just watched Detevtive Pikachu and let me tell you, I absolutely loved it. The animation was adorable, the storyline was interesting, the acting was great.

But before the film even started I’d already guessed what the twist ending was going to be.

And it ruined nothing.

Not only did I get an immense sense of satisfaction, but watching the big reveal was actually my favourite part. It’s almost like audiences wait the entire movie to see the plot-climax.

But you know who didn’t guess the plot twist? My five year old brother. My little cousin. The kids I babysit for. You know, the majority of the target audience? And my dad, who wasn’t particularly invested in the plot, but thought the ending tied the story up nicely.

And you know what else? No one on the creative team for DP needed to put out a big announcement saying ‘do not under any circumstances spoil our film’ and yet I hadn’t encountered a single spoiler prior to watching the film today.

I know a million people have said it already, but the types of people who guess the endings of films/books/series usually do so because a) they’re just as invested, if not more so, than the creators b) they’re a writer themselves, therefore very familiar with plot structures c) the creators intentionally laid groundwork for their big reveal.

When DP ended I didn’t think ‘God, that was predictable.’ I thought ‘wow, that’s exactly how I would’ve ended it if I was writing!’ And that’s not a bad thing: that’s 100% customer satisfaction!

Stories should surprise with the little things: unexpected friendships, startlingly beautiful quotes, bursts of character development. But I’m all for the plot being carefully laid out and easy to follow.

This!!! I’m so sick to death of writers trying so hard to surprise their audience that they butcher characters and satisfying storytelling along the way.

Like I’m editing an author’s fantasy series at the moment and have accurately guessed all the major stuff that was going to happen, and that is a good thing. It means that clues were left. It means that if someone is trying hard enough to find the little details and piece it together, they’ll be able to get a good idea of where the plot and characters are heading.

An “out there” plot twist does not = a satisfying story/ending.

Detective Pikachu and the first Percy Jackson series of books are both great examples of this. They are good stories, well told but not particularly surprising if you pay attention to details and/or often used fantasy tropes. And that’s not bad! Both for their main target audience and for anyone who wants to enjoy a story without it being some sort of competition with the writers where they lose if you’re not shocked enough.

sometimes when i have writer’s block i like to write a quick scene in which my main character is going Absolutley Ham ™ on a literal block of wood/stone/slime no writing rules no conventions just an angry little mind-gremlin breaking something down so i can then go on to traumatise them through the narrative :-)

I’ve seen a lot of fanfic writers ask for tips to write Deaf characters so I thought I would write some out to help make authentic.  Also feel free to send ask for any questions!

  • Deaf characters exist on a spectrum- it’s rare to have no residual hearing.
  • Deaf characters can’t magically hear perfect with assistive devices. Hearing aids are in the name- an aid.  They make it easier to pick up some sounds.  They are also expensive and a lot of insurance won’t cover.
  • ASL- American Sign Language.  Deaf characters raised by hearing family might not have access to ASL until later in life.  Percentage of Deaf kids educated in fluent ASL is low.
  • ASL has own grammar and syntax totally different from English,  But! It is okay to write ASL in spoken English grammar, especially if you don’t know ASL.  We know what you mean!
  • Avoid Deaf and hearing characters signing and speaking long sentences at the same time. It’s called Sim-Com and ASL users who can do it are rare because sentence structures are totally different.  It would be like trying to write a sentence in English at the exact same time (word for word) as someone speaks it in French.   Sim-com usually used with SEE and still hard for fluent ASL Deaf to follow.
  • Deaf characters can be dizzy!  Many many Deaf have tinnitus and vertigo.  Comes with many hearing loss conditions.  Vertigo can also be triggered by flashing lights, heavy bass sounds.  (very annoying in the car when driving and someone has loud, shake your car bass)
  • Deaf characters can also can have balance problems from inner ear issues.
  • Deaf characters can enjoy music!  Many ways to enjoy music besides hearing all of it.
  • Lip reading is hard.  You need to start at the beginning of the conversation, need constant context, and when you lose the thread it’s hard to get back.  Many many words look the same on lips that sound totally different.  Avoid magic lipreading in characters.
  • Character doesn’t need to have a Deaf accent.
  • Deaf character doesn’t need to talk loud.  Many Deaf talk very soft because they feel vibrations before the vibrations make audible noise.
  • Deaf characters can be very fluent in written English and great writers but still have very poor sentence skills when being casual in texting or conversation (like me!)  Hard to go from ASL to English brain, and makes you tired.
  • Deaf characters can use ASL Slang!  ASL has colloquial signs that have no direct English translation but we use all the time (peh peh, train go sorry, champ, etc etc)   Here are some examples!

That’s all I have for now.  Hope it helped!

Grantaire whose native language isn’t French (first generation immigrant) and his French is really good, but he slips back to his native when he’s tired or when he swears and also during sex, so Enjolras would hear a string of words in a completely different language and just nod and go “I think Grantaire just stubbed his toe”.

Enjolras and Grantaire lying in bed after sex with R trying to teach him some things and Enjolras is extremely bad at languages and keeps fucking up and they laugh and tease and it’s their little inside joke.

Enjolras who decides he’s going to surprise Grantaire and learns a sentence to say, but between him putting it on Google Translate and his horrible, horrible accent, he whispers it in his ear and Grantaire just pauses, frowns for a minute, and then laughs for fourty minutes straight.

Just immigrant!R and bad-at-languages!Enj <3

Master of the house isn’t my favourite les mis song but I do love that it preps the audience to see Thénardier as the funny haha joke cartoon villain only for him to pop out up in the sewers singing about how god is dead and life can only mean trampling on other people and the implication that yes what happened in the barricade was terrible and sad but not as terrible and sad as a society that forms a man like Thénardier.

And this is why I dislike Thénardier actors who play Dog Eats Dog for laughs (looking at you, Thénardier in the UK tour). That’s a chilling song, and it shouldbe.

Step-siblings Grantaire and Musichetta who were competitive dancers in their teenage years and can still fall into rhythm and be extremely graceful together at a moment’s notice.

Except that now, instead of putting on fancy, uncomfortable clothes and dancing for a bunch of people judging their every imperfection, they use their superpowers (as Bossuet calls them) to goof around whenever someone puts on music for their friends who cheer them on  whenever they do something particularly flashy.

For a long time Enjolras doesn’t know, because he doesn’t usually go out with the Amis at night, and then on the 1st of May they’ve gone to have a picnic at a park after the demonstration, and someone puts on music. And Grantaire gets up, does a big, mocking bow in Musichetta’s direction, and asks her if she would do him the honour.

And Enjolras is mesmerized. He didn’t know Grantaire could move like that!!
